iPod Is Not Recgonized By Computer and Wont Turn On!!

I decided to use my iPod Nano which hasn't been used for a long, long time. When I picked it up I couldn't even get it to turn on. I tried resetting it by holding the middle and menu buttons at the same time while it was disconnected, and connected to the computer. When I plug it in it is as if there is nothing there. Windows and iTunes both do not recognize it as new hardware being plugged into the computer. I have no idea why this is happening. Any suggestion?
