You don't have to worry about messing up your iPod when you play around with modifying the firmware, if you mess it up you'll know it, because it'll look really wrong, and you can just restore it with a fresh copy of the firmware. There is a guide here: [brace yourselves for a different website!]

    http://i8b.net/mass/iPodWizard/viewtopic.php?t=146

That's pretty helpful in how to get started. The only thing not mentioned is the neccesity of keeping the images the same sizes as the ones your replacing, and how to easily resize the image. I personally use this program:

    http://www.imageresizer.com/

It's a little clunky to use at first, but once you get a hang of it it makes life much easier.

You need to install the updater, then you'll have a folder called 'iPod' and the updater will be in there.

I have a couple of (more than likely - stupid) questions about Rockbox.

    1. You said it can't play videos, is there any way to switch back and forth between Rockbox and the Apple OS when you want to watch a video? Do you know if there are any plans to make video compatible with Rockbox?

    2. How to you upload music onto your ipod with Rockbox?

    3. Do you know if there's a kind of user manual for the program anywhere? I tried the one on the site, but I didn't find it very helpful.

Awesome tutorial by-the-way. Really easy to follow!

thecraigc - All the iPod firmwares are here:

    http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369

You can either use iHack which will allow you to simply update [which won't erase all of your music] or just plain old restore [which will clear everything from the iPod]

scarlet84 - Rockbox will more then likely not support video playing for some time strictly because it is used on more then just the video iPod, and not every mp3 player plays videos. If you want to switch back to the Apple OS its pretty simple, just hold down 'Menu' on your iPod as you turn on your iPod and wait until the screen says 'loading original firmware' I recommend turning the iPod on with a button other then Menu, and then holding Menu, otherwise it sometimes doesn't work and you have to turn the iPod back off and on again.

Rockbox acts as a file tree manager. If you add a folder of music directly to the HD of your iPod it will appear in Rockbox. It unfotunatley can't be the same library as the one iTunes adds to your computer because it has a funny labeling system that is pretty much unrecognizable.

I don't know of any user manual that is availible unfortunately just have to poke around until you learn everything.

After you've extracted the files the decompressed folder should have an icon with a wizard-esque hat, which is the program. Open that up and then the guide explains the rest.

If that doesn't help what is it exactly that you are having trouble with?

I seem to do all the steps correctly except this one=/

    TRANSFERRING TO IPOD

All you have left to do, is simply connect your iPod to your PC and use the "Restore" feature on the Updater to rewrite the firmware with the modified version.

However, if you don’t want to "Restore" your iPod (Which deletes all content), You will have to patch the Updater with iHack

iHack will set the iPod’s firmware version a small amount below its current level before you run the iPod Software Updater, re-enabling the "Update" button. Open iHack (you will find it at C:/Program Files/iHack/ by default), and click the "Patch..." button while your iPod is connected to your PC and the disk mode feature is enabled. Select your iPod’s drive letter, and iHack will do the rest. Now click the "Update" button, and you will have successfully changed the graphics on your iPod.
