iPod not shutting down?

I already had an iPod mini and just got an iPod video (60 g) for my birthday and am very excited about it. Over the past couple of days, I've been trying to figure out how to get video (dvds) onto my iPod with little luck.

But I have noticed that it won't shut down all the way. When I hit pause, it will dim and then it will leave a very dim outline on the screen, almost like a screen saver. I didn't think anything of it until this morning when I noticed that the battery was totally dead.

Has anyone else noticed this? Or am I doing something wrong when shutting it down?

    Thanks in advance.
