Is it cheaper to buy a dvd player that supports-ram or should i just buy a new writer?

Ok i have trying for days to figure out the the DVDs burnt on my comp would not play on my settop dvd player even after converting the files. Well i figured my problem out. dvd drive on my computer is -ram but my settop dvd player does not support disk burnt on a -ram driver. So should i just get a new dvd player or should i get a usb dvd burner that is not -ram?

 

also mods feel free to move this post as i wasn't sure what section to post this question in. I really do need help with the question though.

 

I am useing dvd-r but the dvd i burnt will not play in my stand alone player. Even after converting the files. So i called my dvd player maker and discussed the problem with them. They asked me if the dvd writer on my computer was a -ram drive aand i told them yes it was. Then they said that my model and most models of dvd players would not play a dvd burnt in a -ram drive. I said but i used a dvd-r disk which is supported. They then said that didn't matter because burning a disk in a -ram drive made them unreadable in most tv dvd players. That is where i am at at the moment. Also if the person i talked to is mistaken then feel free to say so. I just started doing this a few days back.

 

I have got a DVD-RAM drive (LG2166 external). I use +R discs and have had no problem playing any disc it has produced. Go to WallyWorld and get a cheap Chinese DVD player. They will play pizzas!

 

also, make sure you're using good quality media. if your drive is rated to burn dvd-r blanks (which it seems to be) they should be able to play in a dvd player. does your dvd player support -r discs? for compatibility, it's generally best to burn dvd+r and booktype your discs, but i'm not sure you have that ability with your drive.

 

Ok i am geting more confussed. Here is exactly what i did. perhaps someone can tell me what the problem is if it isn't my driver.

1 downloaded scarymovie from lime wire it was a .mpg file.
2 converted the file to dvd useing cucusoft.
3 tested dvd in my computer and it worked
4 attempted to play it in my home dvd player and it says eject disk no play back available.
my comp is a hp pavilion a1530n and my dvd player is a emerson dvd burner/vcr combo. It only supports dvd-r and that is the kind of disked i used.

 

is this dvd-ram drive one you've added? according to the sources i checked, you should have a drive capable of burning dvd+/-r, not dvd-ram.

the file you downloaded...was it mpeg or mpeg2? if mpeg2, you can just burn it straight to dvd, no conversion necessary, as this is the standard format for dvds.

what brand dvd-r's are you using? it could just be crappy blank media.

you really need to read some of the guides stickied around here for burning dvd files. it seems your background knowledge is hindering us helping you.

 

I use disk made by a company called verbatim. I was told by hp the maker of my computer that the drive wrote in dvd-ram.

 

ok i would like to thank everyone that is trying to help. its no reflection on you guys but i am more confussed today then yesterday. yesterday i was told by a rep at hp that the burner in my comp was dvd-ram. So i thought that solves my problem. So just now i get back on chat and ask them if they make any models that do not use a -ram drive. The rep i am chating with now ask me for the model number of my hp. He then tells me that my drive is not -ram rather it is -r/-rw. So that just makes me more confussed.

 

the first rep just made a mistake. you're not really going to get any good help from HP because no corporation wants anyone to be able to burn movies and play them in a dvd player (downloading copyrighted material tends to be illegal and all).

so you're using verbatim dvd-r's. that's good, as they are good media and are compatible with your drive. what i suggest you do is take those burned movies of yours and try them in another player, to see if the issue lies in your burning or in your dvd player. we'll go from there, okay?

 

Have you tried to back up a dvd that you own using your burner?Auslander is right you for sure have -r/-rw drive and the hp agent made a mistake the first time. Verbatim good media too. I would suggest try burning a dvd that you own so you get use to burning the discs and then start on the other stuff. Here is a site that will get you started and some free downloads and guides. ok my comp has been down for a couple days. I just happen to have a trail of the latest version of nero 7 on my comp. As i was told that it was probably the best software for me. so anyway i burnt a tekken 5 law combo vid useing nero vision. it still does not work in my old player here is the log file. I will try the guide posted by garmoon. When i used nero vision i just added the file and kept clicking next untill i got to the burn button. Not sure if that is ok or not. I also got a cheap phillips dvd player for testing. It says it plays divx and the guy that sold it to me said it would play both .mpeg and .avi

 

ok a i found a site that lets you put in your model of dvd player and it will tell you what it does and doesn't support. Mine got no's in most eveery catagory. so i hope my new player will solve the problem. my old player is a emerson r20v4

I noticed in the log file that the user was using nero with 1 pass VOB encoding. Many moons ago I had to change that setting to 2 passes for that particular machine and that particular problem. I just bought the HP Pavilion dv8305us, and I was all happy because I didn't even know it had a DVD-RAM drive, so I was stoked. I even went to wikipedia before reading the post, and still decided to burn to a -RAM disc. That solves that problem! Thanks for raining on my short parade!

Yes, I could go search for what 1 or 2 passes means, but I wouldn't understand it, and really don't care to. As I said, if it works, that's all I care about. I just wonder if setting to 2 passes is causing issues on newer burners.
