can anyone reccommend how often i should defragment my hard drive? ive been getting a lot of problems recently with things taking forever to start, pages in ie not loading, games crashing etc & think its down to the fact that my hard drive is 62.74% fragmented.. could thid be the cause?? which is the best defragmenter out there? i used to use the built in one with windows xp, but didnt like it.. i now use o&o defrag v8 proffesional & have just got defragmenter pro plus v3.0 as well.. any help is appreciated. thanks
hi, defragment once a week or so i guess; up to you. i use Executive Diskeeper, very good product, the built-in defragmenters are pretty useless, in times gone by you used to get the built-in one to work by running it in safe mode, shows how long since i've used the built-in one.. edit- your problem won't be down to lack of defragmentation, more likely spyware or similar
ok thanks guys.. what would you suggest running? i only have avg pro, ad-aware pro & spybot search & destroy.. would these do? i was thinking of getting zonealarm pro instead of using windows firewall, would this be a wise decision? also, ive always wanted to ask this, but forget. what's the teatimer thing for in spybot s&d? any help is appreciated.. thanks guys
no worries. i'll let ddp post one of his proverbial replies re the programs he recommends as i rarely bother with checking for spyware etc. I spend most time online in Linux so don't have to fear Microsoft's in-built insecurities ie Windows' ability to attract & collect viruses so effortlessly for any of my Windows machines i use McAfee and keep it updated every day but as i say i very rarely have to use programs such as ccleaner, adaware etc etc
no probs; here's a few links with some things to try - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/390316/2355399 http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/263189
dougal, Spybots teatimer strictly controls reg changes by programs other than the original author. This helps prevent browser highjacking and other nasty little tricks used mainly by adware programs. It can be bothersome in it's own way, until you get your list of allowed changes, it always pops up to ask if a change should be allowed. Since the advent of windows defender I don't use spybot anymore although I still think it is some wonderfully written freeware.
