    Hi all,
I have a Dell 6400 laptop with the following writer -
    tsstcorp dvd+ - RW ts-l632d

Will I be able to burn Xbox 360 back ups on it?
It states in the manual - DVD+R Double Layer

    Cheers,
    Al

If you use the best burning program available (ImgBurn) and decent media (Verbatim), yes.
To see what your burner can do, run ImgBurn and click Tools > Drive > Capabilities.

Note that slim laptop burners are considered somewhat less robust than the burners found in desktops.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the response.
Its only till I can afford a decent burner. Not ideal I know.

In terms of getting a burn that works....is there anything I need to do to the drive in the laptop?
Or is it just a case of following a IMGBURN tut on here?
    Al

If you have the latest firmware, good media and a good burning program the rest is up to the burner.

It only applies if you are using DVD+R media.
You have to tell the burning software to apply it.

    Ahhh...I am.
    The burner specs says -

DVD+R Double Layer - Write - OK, Read - OK, Play - OK

DVD-R Double Layer - Write N/A (Write requires appropriate application software), Read - OK, Play - OK

I am confused....any ideas if it will work and what I need to do to the drive?
I will be using IMGBURN and DVD +R media

My burners have always spelled out that they could burn or not burn a particular format - I haven't seen one that depended on software.

    Hi all,

I am in a similar situation. My laptop is about 6 months old and according to Device Manager my DVD is a Slimtype DVD A DS8A4S.

So, provided I use Verbatim DVD + R DL and Imgburn, I should be able to backup and copy my Xbox 360 games?

    Thanks

yes.. maybe you will get 5 or 6 before the burner dies.. that is if any work at all.. laptop burners are "light duty" burners.. they really aren't up to the job.. and at 4x at least the price of a good full size one and 2x the price of a good external in a usb housing.. why waste your burner for a very short term gain?

ignore the crap about changing the bitsetting.. the 360 doesn't care.. in fact it likes +r disks left just like that... that's if the burner will even do that..

burning 360 disks is an art.. some hardware won't do it.. My old 3550a burns as well now as the day it came out of it's bag 6 years ago.. has never managed to burn a 360 disk yet that worked.. a cheapass samsung that was half the price a year later burns them a treat.. even though it's burn quality scans are poor compared to the NEC ..

only hard and fast rule.. verbs.. second reasonably true rule.. laptop burners are generally light duty crap and either won't make a working burn or will die after a very few.. 3rd rule.. READ THE BACKUP TOPICS AND GUIDES!!!!

OP with the tsst 1663d?.. was it.. should work if it's made in the last 4 years or so.. if it's older forget it!! again a laptop burner.. at least being a sammy it should do a few tens before it flakes out on you..

    Thanks ps355528.

After reading many forums, I was under the impression that a computer won't read a Xbox360 DVD unless the DVD drive was "flashed??".

I think you need a Kreon drive to read and rip em.

OK. I was getting a bit confused. After reading this discussion I thought that as long as you had a newer DVD drive in your computer it would work.

    HI,
I had a go last night...several in fact and no luck.
Basically I followed it step by step (I think) and tried burning at 2.4x....it hung for ages at setting L0 data zone capacity....then got a 'Failed to set L0 data zone capacity' error. Once I got this error I clicked cancel and with the same disc I tried 2x and it got to 71% and failed (log for this burn below).
After this I tried at 4x and got the 'Failed to set L0 data zone capacity' again so again I tried clicking cncel and tried at 2.4x again and it got to 100% but failed to finalize the disc.

My questions are....when it fails to set the LO data zone capacity....is the disc already screwed and is there anything I can try in the settings to get this to work?

I know now that using any discs other that Verbatims is a no no, however the guy that flashed my XBOX uses these Datawrite discs and then tested them on my console and said they are fine to use....so I bought a load!

Anyway, here is the log -

Invalid Address For Write is usually the tall tale signs of a shabby drive or incorrect writing parameters in the Firmware.

you could try manually setting the speed, 2x~4x. people think setting the drive to a lower write speed improves disc production, doesn't always hold true. iv had the disc bindings melt do to the heat of the drive at 2x speed.

and an hour to burn a disc is insanity any way.

Changing your Book type to DVD_ROM is a must if your planing to use it online or use XBL with it, DVD-R booktype is a insta ban flag.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the response.
When you say manually set the speed, I simply changed it at the drop down on the bottom right, is that correct or do you mean going into settings?
Regarding the book type, I went into it and selected DVD+RW DL and then set it as DVD ROM...is that correct?

I did all the above and it failed.

its essentially the same burning program, only older and not modified. if you can set up imgburn there's no reason you can't set up decrepter.

Edit* post your logs for a comparison if you will even if it does work.

    Ta...will give it a go.
Failing that I will buy an internal for my desktop and use better media.
I am having trouble finding a suggestion for a burner other than Pioneer 110d, 111d, 112d, 115d and 116d..........which are very hard yo find where I live and on ebay.
Do you have any suggestions for either a different brand or a newer Pioneer?
I am hoping to get one for about £15 (dreaming maybe?)
