    Hi-

I just updated to XP Pro from Windows '98... and have had no luck getting my burner to work in XP...

    Specs.
System: P3, 500 MhZ, 128 MB Ram, Seagate 120 GB master drive.

    Burner Info.:
    Yamaha CRW6416SZ, SCSI Interface
    16X Read
    6X Write
    Firmware Version: 1.0d

    SCSI Specs.
    Adaptec AHA-2930CU PCI SCSI Controller
    Drivers:
    1. aic78xx Adaptec Ultra SCSI miniport version 3.60a (Lab01_N.010510-0033)

    2. Cdrom SCSI CD-Rom Driver version 5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)

-I've done all critical windows updates and most all XP updates (except for a couple advanced networking updates for business/LAN)

-I've updated my yamaha CD-R drive firmware and disabled 'autorun' and DMA settings before flashing the firmware.

-I've tried 3 different software programs (Roxio Easy CD 5.5, Nero 6.0 and Hotburn)- none will work.

-Roxio and Hotburn try to burn - Roxio creates an unreadable disc. Hotburn hits 99% complete and locks up. Nero locks up immediately and gives 'Unknown BurnPhase' error.

    Can anyone offer some advice?

    Thx.

    hi

did you install your burning apps "after installing XP" ???? if not uninstall and install again !!!!!! you may be on win98 drivers!

also install adaptec.com ASPI layer! just go to there site and download and install and reboot!

then let us know if it works ok!

after those 2 things i would put "DMA" back on!!!!!

    Thx...

    hi-

I un-installed nero, disabled DMA on primary and secondary IDE's and dowloaded the Adaptec ASPI layer 4.71 for XP and installed. I then re-enabled DMA and rebooted - then re-installed Nero and proceeded to try and burn an audio cd... same 'Nero BurnPhase Error' when burning tried to begin...

Should Autorun be back on in the registry maybe???

    Any other ideas?

DMA should be enabled m8. In Device Manager>IDE DVD\CD-Rom, does it say where your Yamy is that "this device is working properly"? Any "yellow" markers? Yamaha is out of the cd burner business and it appears much burning software doesn't support Yamaha cd burners. Try The Firmware Page to be absolutly sure your using the latest firmware and if you are, well then... Autorun should be enabled if you play backups of Safedisc 2.8-2.9 Try burnatonce (freebie) and burn a data disc and see what happens. I would uninstall any packet write software (if applicable) for now.

    Hi-

Thanks for the info. Couple things...

    1. I've read thru a number of pages on the forum that seem to indicate that the most current yahmaha firmware version for my drive (1.0d) is problematic... other member posts have said that I should revert back to firmware vers. 1.0c. (didn't see that recommendation related to my specific yammy model, but other models in the yammy family...)Think that would be worth a try?

    2. ASPI: seems that my ASPI layer has conflicts and is corrupted... I updated the ASPI to the most current Adaptec version then installed Nero 6(which appears to have tried to overwrite with it's own ASPI layer)In any event, Nero InfoTool says the ASPI layer is corrupted... below is a complete InfoTool profile on my Yammy CD-R/RW drive, drivers, ASPI etc... can you take quick look and see if you see any other problems.

Also, what's the best way to clear up my ASPI problem with Nero?

    1. Nero uses its own aspi so you dont need to worry about that.
    2. Just use the ASPICHK tool to see if your ASPI is installed correctly (dont trust Nero InfoTools!)
    3. I reccommend ASPI 4.60 (1021) but you can also try the latest too (i think it is 4.72). Installing ASPI is a simple task requiring one reboot.

For more information regarding ASPI see http://cd-rw.org/articles/archive/aspisetup.cfm

I uninstalled nero then I did the ASPICHCK and I have the following:

    component version size
    ASPI32.SYS 4.71.2 16512 bytes
    WOWPOST.EXE Not Installed
    WINASPI.DLL Not Installed
    WNASPI32.DLL 4.71.2 45056 bytes

I then installed buratonce software and received the following errors when I tried to open the software...

    ---
    Error 0:
    Error occurred in: frmMain:scanbus

App Version: 0.99a Windows Version: 5.1.2600
    ---

    Error 424: Object required
    Error occurred in: frmMain:getDrivers

App Version: 0.99a Windows Version: 5.1.2600
    ---

    Error 424: Object required
    Error occurred in: frmMain:getDeviceIndex

App Version: 0.99a Windows Version: 5.1.2600
    ---

and a few more errors... when I cliked thru the errors and opened the software, burnatonce could not see my burner...

I am at my wits end... could be a new burner will be necessary... I don't think this one will work with XP...

    Try this:
    1. Uninstall EVERY SINGLE STINKIN burning app
    2. Install Nero
    3. Install Alcohol, CloneCD, Blindwrite, whatever
    4. Install ASPI 4.60 (1021)

Yes - I did try forceaspi at one point as well...

But I will give it another try...

I did submit a support inquiry to yahmaha to see if they could offer any suggestions...

Has anyone heard that I may need to revert back to an earlier version of Yahmaha firmware to solve the problem?

I read a couple threads that were for another yahmaha model that said that firmware version 1.0d is problematic and that earlier version 1.0c should be installed... any truth to that? I have been searching for firmware 1.0c but have yet been able to find it...

Also, the firmware indicates that 'Autorun' and DMA on all IDE's should be disabled for just about all versions of Windows before flashing (however, they make no mention of this being necessary for XP...) I've tried it both ways (disabled and not disabled)with no luck either way... should Autrun and DMA be disabled when flashing firmware to an XP op system?

    Thanks.

well - some progress I guess.

I did ASPI check and noticed that a couple of the dll files were not installed for some reason...

I unistalled all burning aps... I then re-flshed the firmware with DMA disabled on IDE's and Autorun turned off in registry.

I rebooted and turned Autorun and DMA back on and rebooted again...

Then, I Killed the exiting ASPI and dumped it and rebooted. I then installed force aspi and aspi check looked good.

I then installed burnatonce and the program installed fine and opened with no errors.

I then tried to burn an audio disc... the disc burned but the buffer only performed at 99% capacity and the disc was unreadable when I tried to open it.

I then tried to burn a data disc and that process errored out immediately...

    Any next ideas?

Well I honestly believe this is a firmware issue. When you went to "The Firmware Page", did you download all firmware for your Yamy, flash, burn, errors? Try this and if you are unsuccessfull, then grab a Memorex 52MAXX cd burner (butta cutta) for backing up pc game protection (Safedisc 2.9& SecuROM 4.8.4) and cost less than the Asus 52x cd burner . Asus 52x is the better "all around burner" but the Memorex 52MAXX extracts audio fast enough, great dae accuracy, supports Mt. Rainer as well.

Go to download firmware>Yamaha cd burner

yes - I've tried so many combinations with the firmware...

Reality is the last available firmware Vers. 1.0d says it's for XP (and NT, 2000, etc.) on the yahmaha download page but it was obviously developed/released w/o XP in mind, as the install dialogues make no mention of XP when you install and flash... just about every other Windows op system except xp is mentioned (including 2000 and NT) - so I think this was their last firmware release before exiting the burner business and it actually doesn't really work in XP...

But it could be a SCSI/ASPI thing too I suppose...

For the amount of time I've spent trying to figure this out, I could have bought a new burner... just want to make sure I don't chub up for a newbie and still encounter the same probs...
