I am running Win98 and I have an A-Open 40x12x48x cd rewriter and it has suddenly stopped working. When you put a cd in the light flashes on and off with a brief pause about three times and then starts flashing rapidly. I get the error message that the drive is inaccessible. What can I do as I cannot access any repair software or diagnostics.

    1. The drive might actually be fried
    2. Can you access the drive in DOS? (this would help to eliminate the possibility of a Windows problem which can then be solved by a reformat)

    1. Check that the cds you are trying to test are actually good.

    2. Uninstall the drive in windows and let it reboot to try and reinstall it.

    3. Try a new firmware for the drive.

    4. If you have another computer available or a friend's, try the drive in that machine

    5. I suspect this is the case, the drive is toasted :(
