I have heard loads of different answers previously.

All I want to know is:

Can I use a VGA - HDMI cable directly from my laptop to my TV, or do I need the converter people have mentioned?

My laptop has a VGA connection, and my TV a HDMI/S-Video connection. It is a Toshiba Rezga 32" (brand new).

My laptop is a Toshiba Equium L40-10x with Intel 945 Express Chipset.

There is no simple VGA to HDMI cable;the two signals are totally different. You need a converter.
