Then maybe they should make it so you need a certain amount of posts before you can post in the Safety Valve...

    here is an idea..

rank posters like ebay does with it's sellers.

Let us (the posters with questions) rank the help that we get from the ones that answer, and the rankings show up by our name. Maybe in % form of positive feedback.

Why do people have to whinge all the time about members being promoted. We all know that it's bound to happen eventually, just because someone devotes a lot of their time answering threads and helping where possible and makes it to Addict in a short time, who gives a toss.

I say let's make brobear a mod and then he can have the power he obviously seeks and then he can run things as he wishes, ban members, demote Addicts, wouldnt be too long before he was the only one left.

I dont post much but I log on daily and observe what's going on...some people really confuse the newbies with their waffling, others take time to explain things a little more simpler. I am sure the newbs just want an answer that will assist them with their problem and not listen (or read) someone's waffling.

Like it or not, thats my 50cents worth.

I have to disagree...That is just an opinion that your are stating..And Brobear never stated he wanted power or to be a mod.........So i don't know what you are talking about
And he helps out alot in the PC hardware forums......And these are suggestions it is not happening right now......Why do you think he would ban members anyway and demote addicts..Mods can't even demote.......
    That is my 50 cents

If AD were to introduce the Karma system, which I think is a good idea, how many posters are going to bother rating their "assistance' while now most do not even bother to get back with the results they have achieved after being helped, you only have to go back through the threads and see for yourself.

My take on the matter is that there are a certain few who haunt the safety valve forum, bumping up their post count and possibly achieving a higher status in a shorter time.

One solution that has been suggested on a number of occasions is DO NOT count posts from safety valve, after all it's virtually only a "CHAT" forum for members.

The opinions I expressed earlier are my opinions only and I stand by them.

Because you dislike the spin a person has on the situation, you get personal and call them power mongers or ill informed as to the true nature of things. You have your opinion and are welcome to it.

At no time have I ever sought a position of power here at AD. I'm a forum Admin on a couple of forums and I don't go around banning members. In fact over the past 2 years, I've banned less than 5 and that was for flagrant abuse of forum rules. Then it was with the agreement of other staff members, not a rash decision of my own. In the not so distant past, senior members were shown courtesy and if a disagreement arose, it was handled on the merit of what was in the discussion, not personal feelings.

Over the past couple of years, I've helped in the hardware section. A lot of things there spin off to discussion, it does cover quite a bit of the latest hardware and technology though. I'm also a regular in the Newbie section and I have a high success rate, or at least I get a lot of thanks for helping. One of the reasons I can cover a lot of area is because I build my own PCs and have an extensive software and DVD movie library. I've been guilty of going out and buying a DVD just because the copyrright protection system was new. That so I could actually say I'd done that release and a certain method accomplished the backup. Usually I look for an easy method a novice can use. So, in the end, my bitch is still being harangued by members with a padded count trying to be self important. I know who I am and don't need the laurels. As I stated before, with the current state of affairs, the staff is welcome to change my rank back to Newbie.

The topic of forum member ranking came up in another thread and this was suggested as a place more appropriate to restate it. So, now I've stated my opinion in the right place as well as the wrong one. It was known that I didn't agree, as a lot of Seniors and Addicts at the time didn't agree, it was a good plan of action for automatic (post count) advancement. Most everyone realized what would happen and it has. Members promoted without consideration of their knowledge or ability to help others has been the over all problem. That alone wouldn't cause problems, but when some of them achieve their lofty status, they suddenly become an expert on everything.

Much of what I've learned has been with long hours of study and research. I'm not a specialist, but I have hours of college classes on PCs, software and theory. Add to that a lot of hands on experience and you have a picture of my knowledge of hardware and software. I'm about as comfortable installing a mobo with new BIOS as installing a new app. Just to keep my finger in the software arena I keep a number of DVD backup specific titles in my collection.

DVD2One, DVDneXtCopy, DVD X Rescue, DVD X Copy Platinum RF, DVDFab, Platinum (Gold and Express), DVDFab Decrypter, CloneDVD 2, AnyDVD, InterVideo DVDCopy4, Nero 7, ProCoder 2, CCE, HC, InterVideo WinDVD 7, DVDReMake Pro, DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, DivX Player, DivX Converter, WinAVI Video Converter, VSO ConvertXtoDVD, PgcEdit, FixVTS, Imgburn, IsoBuster, UltraISO, and Rebuilder are some of the programs I have loaded on this PC. VSO's CopytoDVD, Blindwrite and some others could be quickly installed if I feel the need. Alcohol 120, 1ClickDVD and DVDSanta are available in my software library. Speaking of DVDSanta, I need to reinstall it, it's an overlooked gem. Poor name, but good software for the buck. But I'm going astray, the point is, I have and know this software and am capable of helping others with it (including the ability to edit and upload screenshots to help members that don't understand how something works or where a control is in a hidden box (drop downs, control option windows, and supported software options for example). That quote, "a picture is worth a thousand words", is very true.

With all the software listed above, there's some I haven't listed and there's still a host of AV and PC utilities I have and have tried for taking care of the system and the software installed. Now you know why I have those large hard drives. LOL

Still, I realize I don't know it all and I'm constantly having things added to my knowledge base. The best thing I ever learned from one of my college professors is that a person can't know it all. One of the best things a person can learn is to admit not knowing everything and not trying to remember everything and know the sources to find information when needed. Ideally the forum is supposed to be such a place with a kmowledgable collection of people involved in doing the latest backups with the best software applications. It's those who post without knowing what they're talking about that hurt that scenario, with some of those just posting to flatter their own ego. You have some who regurgitate only what they've heard here on the forum with no personal experience with a topic. How many times have I heard "Memosux" to find out the person saying it only knows other forum members are saying it?

As for the Safety Valve, I rarely post here. Things get more hostile here than on the rest of the forum. It's here for venting, not attacking. Even here, discussions should be on merit and not just personal feelings. Hopefully there's some reason to justify the bitching. ;) Then everyone needs a good rant on occasion, just don't get personal and call names.

If things keep going the way they are, I may join Jerry. I suspect there are those who wouldn't miss me and some who would be happy to see me go. ;)

Great save on that PC. Too bad about the mouse. If I'd known, I could have passed one along. Seems I have more mouse{s), (mice?), than I do PCs. Best thing I ever found along the lines of throwaway electronics was a big boom box. It has digital tuning with cd and the works. It's a big Panasonic, but still portable enough to take out on the lake with us. All I had to do was take it apart and use a heat gun to dry the circuits. My neighbor had let it get wet. It wasn't soaked, just damp inside. I was going to return it, but he'd already bought another and said I'd fixed it, so just keep it. The cd player hadn't worked for him in sometime. That was just a switch adjustment on the door. Nothing like that PC you found though. My bitch, I've never found a perfectly good PC setting in the garbage for me to find. Old P2s setting in storage don't count. LOL
