just info...ye got help from Sweden also it might work with the riaa black fish

    RIAA lawsuit insurance offer

p2p news / p2pnet: A company in Sweden is asking $19 a year to insure you against being sued by the RIAA.

"I have no idea if these insurers can be trusted with $19/year, but it actually sounds like a pretty plausible business model," says Cory Doctorow on Boing Boing.

"If you count up all the file-sharers on the net, and divide it by the all the fines and settlements ever paid to the RIAA, my guess is that it's way less than $19/year, which suggests that you could make a buck (or Kronor) at this."

I dunno, though. As p2pnet has observed elsewhere, with the entertainment cartels, hype springs eternal and that's all the lawsuits are.

    Hype.

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is supposed to be an American 'trade' organization. Of course, it isn't. Only one of its owners, Warner Music, is actually based in the US. The rest, the majority, are from France (Vivendi Universal), Japan and Germany (Sony BMG) and Britain (EMI).

Be that as it may, the RIAA hasn't actually sued anyone yet. All it's done is to fire off subpoenas to some 19,000 men, women and even kids in America. And so far, not one of them has appeared in a court of been found guilty of anything.

Everything else is hype. The RIAA hasn't, for example, been able to back up its ridiculous claim that a file shared equals a sale lost. And despite other claims that people who share music files with each other are criminals and thieves, nothing has been stolen and no money has been exchanged for the shared files.

Other assertions, ie, that the multi-billion-dollar Big Four are being "devastated" by fle sharing, are equally empty,

Against that, around 61 million Americans have shared files, so the odds of becoming a victim aren't exactly high. In fact, they're astronomical in terms of NOT becoming another excuse for the RIAA to issue yet another bullshit puff piece.

Meanwhile, Boing Boing says, " The /. submitter translates the link as follows: 'For a mere 140 SEK ($19 USD) per year, they will pay all your fines and give you a t-shirt if you get convicted for file sharing.'"

    Cheers!
    Jon Newton

Why do I feel the only thing you will get out of this is the T-shirt, which you can wear to your trial, cause the company will be long gone.

    Un-Automating MS updates

p2p feature / p2pnet: Have you ever left your computer on all night to maybe finish burning that DVD? Or during the day while you're out so you can remotely access it from a friend's house? Have you then come back only to find it's at the user logon screen because it's somehow automatically restarted itself?

I have. And not just once either. And it was all because of Windows Update installing it's latest set of security updates. For some reason, it has to restart your computer and stop whatever it was doing because they're just that much more important than anything else.

Well, I did some investigating into why it does this.

The first thing I noticed was simply my Update options. I've always had it set to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them". This way I can make sure I'm not bombarded with pointless updates, or ones I really don't want to install.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. So why if I've told my computer * I* will choose does it do it anyway? Because it has the option to.

Buried deep down in the policy settings for every computer there's a whole group that lets Windows Update do almost whatever it wants. As long as Microsoft say it's critical enough, it'll install it, regardless of what you say or want.

However, you can stop this, or at least delay it until you're ready to start things in your own good time instead of Microsoft's.

Click on Start / Run / and enter gpedit.msc . This brings up the Group Policy settings for the computer. Then it's simple... Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows components / Windows Update.

The ones you're mainly looking for are:

Re-Promt for restart for scheduled installations - This stops that annoying box coming up which has the two options 'Restart Now' and 'Restart Later' from appearing every 10 minutes. By accessing the properties of this, you can set the time to say 720 minutes.

Allow automatic updates immediate installation - This specifies whether Automatic Updates (which are supposed to be your choice) should automatically install updates that neither interrupt Windows services nor restart Windows. This one should be disabled.

    And the most important:

No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations - By enabling this, it means the computer now has to wait for any logged on user to perform the restart, rather than restarting the computer automatically.

Just a few small tips, but at the end of the day, it could save you a lot more time and effort re-doing something because Windows was poorly again.

    Well,

Since this is the place to do it;;; my bitch is about the fact that all of these newb retards come in and all they do is post about the legality of copying dvds for fair use, etc., etc.,.... After reading MANY of those posts accidentally in the 100% WRONG FORUMS, I've finally decided to say something about it. that kind of stuff just plain pi**es me off....
another problem is that we're losing a lot of our senior members because of these noobs comin' in here and disobeying every friggin' rule thinkin' they own the place!! Personally, I don't like it at all. Of course I know that there's Newbies that just want to get down to some learning and are actually willing to use the search button, but there's the others that just don't care.

I remember the first time I came here; there was a whole crap load of Senior Members helping out in the DVD and Home Theater forums; but now; to me it seems VERY DEAD compared to what it used to be. Yes, there are people like Gerry1 that are great helpers and contributers to AD in the Ht and other forums. But, as far as the forums devoted to DVD Backing; I remember so much more than what there is right now. And that's the reason for my earlier bitch about people posting about useless stuff in the wrong forum (ex. questioning Fair Use in the DVD SHRINK FORUM!!!) So, anyway, that was probably my first angry post ever here at AD; so now I plan on enjoying the rest of my day after letting off this steam.

P.S. Whoever it was in that one post (you know who you are) that mentioned the don't ask, don't tell policy, I totally agree with that; then there's no question as to the legality of anything.

@ ireland, don't leave, please. There's not a day goes by that I don't read something you wrote or recomended. It would be a truly sad day here at AD if you left. It would be like doc ty bailing out of the Taiyo Yuden thread or saugman in the fishing thread. Where would I get my morning coffee if not for ireland. So, don't.......... George
