Why can't I hear any sound during VCR or TV tuner usage?

If you're using an HDMI cable it should establish all necessary audio and video connections in one shot, at least in theory. But in many instances you still won't hear any audio at times when you should. If this is happening to you, please read on. For all televisions not having an HDMI connector, refer to the diagram below while making the necessary audio connections

All RCA connectors within the INPUT1 delineated area are internally shared by both the DVD and VCR decks. Those located down in the bottom-half of INPUT1 are OUTPUTs. Let's refer these RCA connectors as OUTPUT1 to make things more intuitive.

If you move the L+R input RCA audio cables presently coming from your television, to the shared OUTPUT1 audio connectors (rather than DVD-only audio), you'll suddenly have audio during DVD, VCR and tuner activity, where any was previously lacking.

However, there's a significant drawback going with this standard audio configuration the manual doesn't elaborate upon, I'll now clarify. All L+R RCA audio connectors located anywhere on the back of the unit are limited to 2.1 Dolby Stereo.

If your television only supports 2.1 Dolby Stereo this distinction is completely irrelevant. But in the event you've invested in a HDTV (or external audio receiver) which supports full 5.1 Dolby surround-sound, you'll be loosing 3 out of 5 of those surround-sound decoded outputs. Most home theater equipment owners would consider this wholly unacceptable.

The best and proper resolution to this dilemma is attaching the shared OUTPUT1 L+R RCA audio output connectors to the corresponding input pair on your HDTV. Finally, connect either the DVD audio digital coax or SPDIF fiber-optic output connector to its corresponding input connector on the television. Note establishing either of these connections require using a special digital audio cable.
