That is correct, if you want to duplicate any DVD's written by the Liteon it has to be finalized. I found this out too. I don't do it to often. I am still using it to record 3 hrs M-F every morning which makes it 15 hours a week. I have a set marked that way and erase and so far have not had any problems. I use two Panasonic Recorders for other stuff becasue it will let me change the Thumbnail Picture. I hate trying to use naming feature. So far though I think the panasonic is superior in quality but the liteon is excellent for the price.

I'm thinking of buying this today. Has anyone tried recording off HBO? I have an LG recorder and if I try to record off HBO or Showtime, I get a copyright protection message and it won't record. I have satellite tv I have the recorder hooked up to.

Not sure but newer recorders have a feature that will not let you record HBO and others. I know Sony does in their newer ones. I just checked my manual and the only thing it mentions is DIVX and VOD which mine does not play anyway. You may want to check the Liteon site and ask them.

Thanks for the recommendation about finalizing on the recorder before ripping on a PC. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to apply to my problem since I'm using DVD+RW discs.

I have a theory, though, and I plan to test it tonight. I think the discs I was trying to rip to my PC were originally formatted by a different DVD Recorder (a different Lite On model, LVW-5001). Then I had recorded some new content to the same disc on the newer LVW-1107HC1. Although they play just fine, they can't be ripped.

So my theory is that DVD+RW's aren't easily rippable to a PC unless the disc was recorded on by only one DVD Recorder. To test the theory, I'll try using a brand new DVD+RW in the LVW-1107HC1 and see if it can be ripped/copied on the PC.

    Until then,
    Kev

I use DVD+RW's also. I had problems trying to use some that had been recorded and erased a few times in a Phillips. RW's are like that but I will try one of the ones that has only used in the 1107HC1. I do 3 hours but when I tried some that had been recorded on four hours the Liteon appeared to do three hours but when it came to the part that had not been used by the Phillips it would not play anything in that area. RW's are cheap enough to set these aside. My Phillips died and that is when I got the Liteon since that is what is in my computer. I don't think the makers of this stuff ever envisioned the wierd things it would do. I used to fight it but now just live with it. As far as the best I still say Panasonic but they are starting to get cheaper like they did with the VCR and hope they don't screw things up.

    Regarding the ripping-what's been-recorded problem:
My experimentation this evening has resulted in the following conclusion: The disc will be rippable by your PC software (e.g., Nero, Shrink) ONLY when there is just ONE program recorded on the disc. Two or more recordings? Forget it.

Does anyone have a guess why this would be the case?
    Any suggested work-arounds?

that seems weird to me, i'm sorry... i don't have an answer.

i have to throw a new question out there.

any MANUAL chapter marks i make using the edit button while recording are not being preserved on finalized disks veiwed on another player (they do work in the 1107HC1). the AUTO chapter marks are working fine in all players.

same result for +r and -r disks. have not tryed +/- rw yet.

has anyone eles had this problem? does anyone eles set MANUAL chapter marks?

would anyone mind setting a few in your next recording to see if they work on another player after finalizing?

    Thanks to everyone!

If I'm not mistaken, manual chapter marks won't work in other players, and I don't think it's just the LiteOn, but rather most or all recorders.

I have a question regarding subtitles. From reading the manual, it says it will play subtitles from DivX files. So I took a DivX file (with an AVI extension) and one subtitle file with extension IDX, and one subtitle with extension SUB. I named them all exactly the same (except the extensions) and put in the same folder, then burned to DVD using Nero. However, when I try to play it on the LiteOn, the subtitles will not appear, and the option to show subtitles is unavailable. Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone been successful in playing subtitles with DivX files? Thanks.

I have tried twice to record with the timer recording, both times one hour shows. I can record and playback when I do manual recording, but when I try to playback the timer recorded stuff, nothing happens. I tried to finalize the disks (DVD-R and DVD-RW) and I keep getting a swap disk message.

    Any suggestions?

I had this machine and took it back as I bought it for the purpose of copying off Dish Net...NOPE in fact after you try and do it, it renders that disc unusable cept for cold drinks......It did work fine on old reruns and network movies, just not pay for view OR HBO-STARZ-and all the rest of the movie channels...sometimes it would record up to 4-6 minutes then switches off and you get the copy-write notice....and from the post's here it seems to be a good machine other than that......
