LiteOn SOHW 832s - No sound from DVDs but CDs playback just fine

This unit was working just fine until recently, when it suddenly stopped playing the audio from DVDs (this problem is with both RW and retail discs). The video playback is OK, it's just the audio that's not working.

Seems odd to me that it will play CD audio but not DVD.

    Any ideas?

Assume you are talking about DVD playback using a program such as PowerDVD.

Had a short similar incident recently after upgrading to PowerDVD5 from PowerDVD4 - perfect video - no sound. Realised that mute option on PowerDVD had enabled itself - changed setting - audio back.

Suggest you check audio options/settings on your DVD playback program. CD audio is a completely different issue.

Actually I am using WMP for DVD playback.

I've checked all the settings on my Audigy Platinum multiple times, checked audio cabling etc. No luck there. I also reinstalled and updated my Audigy drivers etc. Additionally, I tried my retail copy of Rear Window which installed it's own DVD viewer, same issue as above, no sound, video fine.

I'm basically out of ideas here....

DVDs have either AC3 or LPCM audio.
I stopped installing a software DVD player, and just used WMP, myself.
    You require AC3Filter
and set profile to 'loud' or else too quiet.
    Works great.
Then, I got a homemade DVD with LPCM sound.
    No audio.
Fired up my old PowerDVD, select next audio stream, there it comes - nice LPCM audio! It is like a WAV; it is basically uncompressed audio.
Had hell to get WMP to playback that LPCM audio though...
    But 99/100 DVDs will be AC3 :)
Get that AC3Filter installed & tell us if you're fixed up.
Other than that it's just basic PC audio troubleshooting.
Do you get CD audio playback, both digital and analog?
    Game audio, PC sound OK?
What'd you do - lemme guess, SP2 involved in this scenario anywhere, LoL ;)

    Heh, SP2? Fat chance!

Looks like its all sorted out though. Awhile back I uninstalled my PowerDVD and it's likely that my WMP DVD audio went haywire at the same time. I just didn't notice it because I hadn't played any DVD's on my PC for a couple of months. As soon as I reinstalled PowerDVD, the audio in WMP started working again (go figure).

After that I installed the AC3filter (nice tip) and noticed a great difference in sound quality.

Anyway, looks like I'm back in business, thanks for the help!

Also, my Rear Window DVD installed an app called PCFriendly DVD, anyone here have an opinion on that program for playback? I'm gonna be using my PC for watching DVD for awhile and I don't know squat about what is a good player option...

Just googled PCFriendly DVD and it looks like it definitely qualifies as spyware. Guess that one won't be around for long....
