Plus you wouldn't be able to get one to 5Ghz, not without some ridiculous vapour compression cooling anyway, and even then it'd probably only last a few months before the excessive voltage caused electronmigration and destroyed the CPU.
All this said, even at 5Ghz, a 2.66Ghz Core 2 Duo would be faster, that's stock, before you've overclocked it. You can get 4Ghz out of those things too, on normal air cooling (albeit with a large heatsink).

Yea, but how long are you willing to wait for true quads to be released. If you are going to make a purchase today then the Q6600 is the logical way to go ESPECIALLY if you plan to keep your computer for more than two or three years. Programs that do support four threads have shown as much as a 30% performance gain over dual cores. Sure you will not get those five extra framerates in Supreme Commander when you do use a Q6600 as opposed to a E6850 today, but lets look one, two, or three years ahead. By then it will be a whole new ballgame and if you did purchase a quad core today then you will be in a much better situation three years from now than if you decided not to make that investment.

I've not heard much about the new ABIT boards, but the Gigabyte p35 boards are very nice.

Also to increase performance switch to XP, and overclock you card.

The X1950 is a good card, I had a card that was a little LESS powerful than that and it played Bioshock fine. It seems to me it's the cooling on your card and your CPU that's holding you back.

Then there is no reason Bioshock wouldn't play fine. Given you still have a weak CPU but it's not THAT bad. You're fine as far as playing recent games at decent settings goes.

EDIT: Have you tried RMAing the card?

Sorry, it means you return that card or get it exchanged by your manufacturer.

Is it a connect3D X1950 pro? For whatever reason most of those were faulty from the factory. Try and exchange it for a different brand if you can. All the other X1950 Pros were fine..

Yes it was a connect 3d. Maybe they have the problems worked out by now?
