A new firmware would just fix problems that could lie with the router, it would not add speed booster. If you don't want to get the mirror wireless card then I think the one you got is fine, It should work fine. I used a D-Link speed booster router with a old D-Link wireless card and an Intel wireless card and a Linksys wireless card and they all work perfectly. You can update your existing firmware from here: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...rapper&lid=3740141396B07&displaypage=download
This card should "Mirror" your router http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124115

Well I know you CAN upgrade the firmware for routers. I don't know if they have one available for yours though.

Never heard about hacked firmware for a router but I guess its possible but I think speedbooster is a chip upgrade, not a software upgrade.
    EDIT:Guess you can http://cavemonkey50.com/2005/12/install-hacked-linksys-firmware/
If you do install the hacked firmware tell me how it goes.

Ugh.. Of course it doesnt work with version 5 or above. (i have v.5)

Some guy mentioned it on XBL and i had never heard of it before. Supposedly you can get more than 300% range by using it?

I get the hilarious message error "Upgrade are not completed" Followed by "Upgrade are failed!"

DO NOT get a WRT54G version 5, they're absolute ass.
Get the WRT54GL, it's far more stable, more capable, and from what I hear more modifiable as well.
@morquex: Indeed the P182 is a well built case for quietness, but ironically Samsung drives still vibrate too much for it and can produce a fair bit of noise if there's several of them.

Its more of having less RAM that prevents the router from using 3rd party firmwares, there are mini versions of the 3rd party firmware for your router, check this link: http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/ow.asp?WRT54G5_CFE

Lol, posted a bit too late

Funny you say that about samsung drives, I was noticing a little bit of resonace from my case, tracked it down to the samsung units, so I just sold the 2 I had to a guy @work and ordered a couple seagate 7200.10 500GB/s units.
    Should be here on friday.
They get really good ratings on silentpc.com

    Peace all

I love Seagate drives, they are quiet and have a 5 year warranty, longer than a PC would usually last.

My hard drives usually outlast a computer though.

Im sure this should be a new topic BUT!

Is it possible to upgrade a laptop?

    Ok now the real question.

In vista when you select "printer sharing" it always says that its password enabled but the thing is i never set a password on anything. Is it possible to disable the password protection? If not what the heck might the password and username be?

You can upgrade a laptop but to a certain extent. You CAN upgrade the RAM (To the computers limit), Processor (though usually not worth it), Hard Drive (To the BIOS limit).
About Vista, I have no idea about printer sharing, I never played around with Vista enough to get to know file and printer sharing.

I was asking simply because my stepdads old laptop's backlight burnt out and i didnt want to go through the trouble of replacing it and then not being able to do anything with it.

(he replaced it already with an acer aspire 4520) He bought it simply because it looked nice. Thats it. Its incredibly slow by my standards and it comes pre-installed with the WORST copy of vista i have ever seen. 64 bit = crap.

XP might run much better on it. Post the specs, it might be worth replacing the backlight.

New question.. This one is actually a problem.

My old speakers ALL OF A SUDDEN started to make this really fuzzy noise whenever i adjust the volume. I have to turn them way up just to hear anything and music is now all distorted. It was working great one day then when i turned it on the next day they just suck now.

I never have them at high volume so i dont think i blew them out but i think that may be it? Could it be a driver issue or something plugged in or idunno.
