Is there a way to burn a cd with more than the usual 12-17 songs on it. Maybe with 2 r 3 cds worth of songs? thanks in advance

No. You can of course use MP3 or any other compression but then you need a MP3 player/computer for playback.

Or any of the newer, and largely inexpensive standalone dvd players.

I do indeed see why an awful lot people choose mp3 over (somewhat) superior audio formats like ogg vorbis. Hardware support, and mass popularity (despite the recent fee requirements from Fraunhofer). The last three dvd players I've owned (Sanyo/GE(Thompson)/Sony) all handle mp3 data discs, but not *one* has yet incorporated my fave format, vorbis. (Sigh)

Hardware compatibility with available, widespread formats is why I make videocds rather than, say, divx's - no need to sit hunched over a computer.
