Ok I read all 11 or so pages of thread. I kinda got the jist of it but can someone please confirm. My boys both have a NDS-Lite. I first noticed that there was a slot 2 in the bottom of the NDS. So I figured that I would by the M3lite with passcard which I should be receiving today. I never noticed that there is also a slot 1 on the top of the NDS. So does this mean that I could use either the slot 2 m3/passcard or the slot 1 m3 simply on the same ds? If so I've kind of gathered from these threads that the m3 simply is a better solution, easier to use and less expensive to buy than the slot 2 m3/passcard solution. If someone can confirm this then I will probably go with the simply solution for my other sons ds. Final question. Since hopefully after today i load all the roms, update firm ware on the micro sd for the slot 2 solution can I aslo use that same micro sd card for the simply solution when I get it to save buying an extra sd card. In other words can I swap the sd card between 2 nds' with different solutions?
The DS can use both types of device that you have mentioned. The slot-2 devices do have some advantages over the slot-1 devices (eg GBA games, better homebrew support) However slot-1 devices are alot easier to use. You can use the same microSD card, however NDS games will not work in both devices (slot-2 games need to be patched, slot-1 do not need to be patched)
Thanks for the confirmation/clarification. I will go ahead and buy another micro sd card. Since i will only be playing nds games I will buy the slot 1 solution for the other DS. I wish I would have read this thread before. It would have saved me a little bit of money.
OK, I got my MicroSD cards yesterday. I formatted the cards yesterday, no problem. I dumped files onto them. Then, I dropped it into the M3, and booted up the DS. It booted up without a hitch. However, most of the apps/games will not bootup/run. I got two or three to work, but that was it. I am also a n00b about all this please forgive me, but I need a further explaination on what the root directory is. I'd greatly appreciate it.
Most apps and homebrew require DLDI patching before they will work on the M3. DS roms should work from just being copied to the card. The root is the area on the microSD card before you go into any folders, (i.e just F:\ or G:\ etc)
Mrwitness could you direct me to where I could get the ipod emu and please tell me what I have to remove from root and how to install this emu on my ds, I have tried for a while now but and really stuck. Many thanks Ranger
Messed that last message up a bit !! Mrwitness could you direct me to where I could get the ipod emu and please tell me what I have to remove from root and how to install this emu on my ds, I have tried for a while now but and really stuck. Many thanks Ranger
Licks Media player (aka iPod Clone): http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=12369 To remove Moonshell delete the _DS_MSHL.NDS and the Mooshell folder (either shell or moonshl epending on version). Copy the iPod clone to your MicroSD and rename it _DS_MSHL.NDS (CAPS is important)
Thanks mr hanky, works great u saved the day yet agin, many thanks. Only thing I had to leave off the .nds to get it to work, Ranger
Sorry idi not work a treat the player comes up OK with starting on the top screen but cannot access music, I presume I just put music files in my music folder on root of card. Cheers
That could be due to your computer settings hiding the filetype, it is there, but you can't see it so by adding it yourself you actually named it _DS_MSHL.NDS.NDS which is obviously wrong. I always have the option to hide filetypes disabled (helps against trojans as well as knowing what the files are) so forgot about it. EDIT: Just read you other post (that you posted while i was replying the first time) I have just tested the application and have an MP3 in a folder labled MUSIC and it works fine, have you DLDI patched the app? Without the DLDI it won't know how to access the MicroSD
NO I have not, just downloaded a dldi file named m3sd.dldi do I just put it on root of stick or in the ipod emu folder. Cheers Ranger
Sounds like you don't know how to DLDI patch. Quick guide: Go here Download the DLDI for the R4 - M3DSS compatible Download the Win32 GUI of the patcher. Run the patcher and choose the folder you donwloaded the DLDI to. Find the binary (.nds) of the iPod clone Choose patch. When it says completed (should take only a second) your ready to go.
Thank you very much for the lesson, works great. Not being too fussy but it only shows tracks is there work in progress to be able to list albums. ranger
I wouldn't know, I have only used the ipod clone for testing, i have never looked into what it can do or will be able to do in the future.
I think my problem is, I thought I could just dump the files onto a MicroSD disk, drop it into the M3 and be ready to go. Obviously, in my ignorance, it doesn't work that way. another question I do have: You do point out that some files require DLDI patching, but according to this guide, not all do and by patching a files that doesn't need it, it can ruin it. How do I know the difference? Also, do I just copy over the patched file and that's it? I really want this to work (since I also dumped $60 int this) and I'm sorry if I am a bit annoying, but everything that's been has been thorough and concise. Thanks again for your help and patience.
OK, so I did the DLDI thing, and now I get this message: You are not using a card compatible with Chishm's FAT library. Please run this program using a GBAMP or other compatible cards!
