OMG, What have I done? I updated the firmware to the 'Z' level, now many of my burns are failing. Should I go to 'Y" level? The lite-on site does not have the 'Y' version, they have only 'Z'. What do I do?

Hey if that's your garbage can pc - can I have it :0)
Disc to disc for me (on the fly) is about 10 mins? with Nero. (internal burners)
Nero's okay - maybe one day I'll try Roxio again. Been awhile since I last used it.
ssinger using a 1.1 port so that's slowing things down a bit here.

    @ssinger
Your fine on the firmware - that is the latest version. Always best to keep it update to date support new media id's.
The reboot is fine too. Always reboot the pc you did the firmware update on (while external attached). If it didn't ask for then there may be a problem.

Now those disc's are another story. Put a blank in the drive (see pick above) and click on the disc tab - who shows as the manufacturer?

Not all media is created equal unfortunately. Poor quality can be hit or miss when is comes to burning. Even in the same spindle (been there myself).
I'd stay away from the Comp USA brand too. Buying in store can be hit or miss on who the actual manufacturer is with the exception of Verbatim or made in Japan Sony or Fuji (later 2 are usually made by Taiyo Yuden - great stuff). Online from a reputable site you can buy geniune Taiyo to stop the guess factor.

For the Teon, it shows CMS MAG AE1 ( Yay or Yikes? )

For the CompUSA brand, it shows PRINCO...

Can you give me a reference on a reputable online site where I can pick up the Taiyo for a good deal?

ONE VERY CRITICAL QUESTON on the media: Assuming I somehow get by burning the stuff I want with hit or miss, are these media from unreliable sources bad for the long term? The stuff I am burning are very critical and I expect to keep them for decades. If there will be problems in the future reading these discs or deterioration in quality over time, I will probably reburn them using a Taiyo.. Thanks.

    Hi ssinger
    For both brands Yikes!!!
Used both myself and was not a happy camper. Reburned what I could. For long term I would not use them.
Decades storage now - well both Verbatim and Taiyo boost a 100 year archvial life - but hey I don't think I'll be around then to prove them wrong.
Where are you located? US, UK etc

    @ireland
    That's a heck of a find!

I would. Mine on these brands became unreadable. Reripping was no fun either.
This is the site I use and others members here:
    http://supermediastore.com
I've used them for about 2 years - no problems. The Taiyo's are genuine.

I am interested only in writing with a proper marker and not printing or lebeling the DVD... For such use, is there a difference in quality between

Taiyo Yuden White Inkjet Hub Printable (Value Line) 8X DVD-R Media 100 Pack in Tape Wrap

Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R Media Silver Thermal Lacquer in Cake Box Spindle (Premium Line)

Is there a diff between Value line and Premium Line? Between Hub Printable vs Silver Thermal Lacquer? The price difference is not that much, so I will grab the one that is better. But if it is just a marketing thing, then I will get the lower priced one.

I use the silver thermal and inkjet ones (I use an Epson printer to print labels on the inkjet). No difference in quality.

Since you won't be printing to them the silver thermal is fine.

I normal use the premium line but other members here use the value line. No problems with either.

Takes about a week to receive them so in the mean time you can pick some Verbatim (another great brand made by MCC) or look for made in Japan 8x Sony or Fuji. These are usually made by Taiyo Yuden.

Thanks binkie7. I will get those discs and reburn many of my stuff.

Another question: I am getting a lot of read errors ( Cyclic redundancy Check errors ) on my source dics. If I clean the disc, sometimes I can get a file or two and sometimes just retrying works.

Can you give me some tips on maximizing the files I get out of these DVD data discs? Are there any other tools other than 'dragging and dropping' files to hard drive that can do better at retrieving the files?

Oh no the dreaded CRC error - that one can be tough.
The best tool I've tried for these is isobuster. Try that.
    http://www.isobuster.com

Also some drives are better at ripping these than others. So I would try your other drive also.
