I bought a HP laptop last month and it was all swell. However, I have been having this problem for the past two days while burning my DVDs through my laptop (HP dv9010tx). I use Nero 6 reloaded and the error which I have been getting is "Focus on Tracking Error"

Here are the specifications of my laptop and DVD writer
    1. DVD writer is a LightScribe Dual Layer Writer. Drive Model: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-851S
    2. Firmware Version: 1.50
    3. DMA: On
    4. The DVD media I use is by Moser Baer DVD-R. MID: MBI 01RG40
    5. Operating System:Windows XP Professional (5.01.2600 Service Pack 2)
    6. DirectX: DirectX 9.0c
    7. Nero Burning Rom 6,6,0,0

I checked out the Nero help on the net and it suggests that I might need a firmware update (from where do I do this?) or changing my DVD media to some other brand. On the extreme case it says that I might need to change IDE cables or my entire writer itself. My laptop is just one month old and has burnt DVDs succesfully in the past (using Sonic) month so why is this problem taking place all of a suuden now? Please help! If I have missed out any information please tell me and I would add so. Thanks ^_^

P.S: I didn't save the log when this error occoured. Can anyone please tell me if nero saves the log in it's hitsory or something? If yes, then where?

    Hi egress63
More than likely HP would supply any firmware updates for this drive.
I have an HP laptop w/ a Matshita drive and in the 1-1/2 yrs I had it they have never had an update so it can be a bit picky with media.

Moser Baer isn't the best so try a different brand like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

Nero can use an update to - you can try 6.6.0.18. Here's the links:
    Package 1
    Package 2.

Nero does save the last 10 burn logs. You can find them here:
    program files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory. It's a text file.

    Thanks for the relpy! :)

I'll change my media soon. However apart from Sony, none of the other brands that you mentioned are available in my country (India). So I'll try going for Sony henceforth. I was finally able to burn my Moser Baer DVD-R but at a painfully low speed of 2x. Considering I've just spent over $2k on this laptop just last month, I'm very disappointed as of now. Apparently now the error which came once I tried to simulate the burn process was "No seek complete".

I don't have the logs with me right now - I'll post them once I find them (I'm at my office right now). btw, do these forum allow double posting?

Too bad about not having the availability of the other brands. If I knew of somewhere online for India I'd pass it on but unfortunately I don't.

You might want to check with HP and see which brands they say are compatible with the drive.
Media is the 1st thing I would try and rule out.

Forum doesn't allow double posting but since I've posted you can just respond to this one with the log.

I have looked for a firmware update for my DVD drive but non exists. :( I hope this can help in identifying the error. Please tell me if I can solve this problem by my side. Thanks.

I can't find a firmware update either but it doesn't surprise me. Laptop drives don't always get the best support in that department.

Nothing else bad in the log. I would update Nero - use the links above.
    May not do the trick.

Try another program too. Here's a good free one - ImgBurn.
For the video files use the build mode to burn.

Next I would try burning at 4x.

Still a no go then need to rule out the media. What other brands do you have available where you are?
