maxtor external h/d error - i/o error

    HELP! This drive has been fine, i can see it on my pc, but can't access it out of NOWHERE! I get an I/O error. just defragged my system, everything was peachy. This is just a slave/storage drive.

    I replied to this thread, but for whatever reason it hasn't appeared.
    Standard procedure is
    1. different USB port
    2. Different USB cable
    3. Running the hard disk internally.
    If 1 and 2 fail but 3 works, the enclosure might be knackered, if all three fail the drive might be the problem.

    Thanks, going to try the utility. I've switched ports, etc. Not the cable, only because I don't have one handy. If this doesn't work....any suggestions for data recovery? I'd like to rescue everything if possible, then try to reformat the drive after everything is salvaged.
