One other note if I may...

DMA modes above DMA2 "must" have the 80 wire ribbon cable to prevent crosstalk. DMA mode 2 and below are optional. All 80 wire cables are also backward compatible so it's always a good idea to use them no matter what. They are actually 40 wire with an additional 40 wires used as separate grounding leads to help prevent crosstalk with the new higher speed DMA modes which are much faster then before.

i have DMA mode 2,so what you trying to say? mine is shite!!!!

    hehehe

    just kidding

    with regards hursty

i dont care much for the speeds to be honest, they can release a burner that will burn at x100 for all i care,at the end of the day,i will always burn at x4 MAX anyway, problem you have these days the x4 media that is on sale nowadays will soon be a thing of the past, slowly but surely it will be fazed out to x8,then x16 etc etc

then eventually the new blue ray disc's will be out in force.then what?

    with kind regards hursty

alright everyone. i successfully burned my project with a MEMOREX 8X DVD+R. i tried to burn a second the project again, but it didn't work on a TDK 2X DVD-R. I think my minimum write speed is 4x on my TDK drive and that's what caused the error. perhaps i need 4x discs?

Sounds like a media issue to me. Try updating the firmware for that drive. Here is a link that will get you close http://www.tdk.com/dvdburners/index.html

im pretty sure the firmware is fine. I don't know where it is on the website u sent me, but when i took the drive out to reconnect everything, it is labeled on the drive as: Firmware version 1.0C. I think thats the newest version but im not sure. Shouldn't my TDK burner be able to burn 2X DVD-R's even though it says on the box that the write speed is 4x? And yes, my burner can burn any type of disc so i know thats not the problem. In the manual it said that reccommended media for DVD-r's is: 4x/2x, 4.7 GB for general). I thought this should work?

Its not the speed of the media that is the problem it is the brand... What is the speed of your drive? Drive specs?

    i'm just telling u what NeroInfo Tool told me. The model is a TDK 440n DVD+/-R (and DVD+/-RW, CD-R, CD-RW, etc.) I have a TDK burner. Shouldn't I be able to burn a DVD with a TDK 2x or 4x DVD-R?

Problem is TDK doesnt list there drives by model number only burning speed?? Yes you should be able to burn at just about any speed under your max speed. There is a firmware update for the x12 speed. I think you need to email TDK and ask them about that particular drive and see if there is a firmware update for it as this could help your drive be able to recognize more media. Again it isn't the speed of the DVD's that is the problem it is the Brand of media you are using isn't compatable with your writer.

yeah. i mean, i have a TDK burner which is why i was wondering why the burner wouldn't just burn the DVD's. i guess i'm going to call TDK.

Hey i had my Sony DRU710A running in PIO mode adnd thhus the computer was working at a crawl!! i think it was due to the PIO mode since it uses the CPU for processing more...cuz it would really lag as if its running something in HIGH priority...but anyway

I took the advice here by trying to uninstall my secondary IDE chanenl and restarting so it would reinstall with DMA setup, but now the secondary IDE wont install its drivers...and thus my burner wont detect!...

    i have a 2Ghz, 512DDR, 80gb w/ 50 free HD,
    Primary IDE:
    masteR: samsung HD
    slave: LG dvd-rom
    Secondary IDE:
    Master: SOny-DVD-RW

i had initially had everything running well, then windows messed up i formatted and then windows woudlnt detect my drive so i rolled back the driver it worked but it was running SO SO SO SLOW [assuming cuz if PIO mode after the format]
i noticed i was missing ASPI drivers but i installed them...that didnt help much, thats when i read this forum and the PIO/DMA idea...but now im stuck with no IDE...

    i tried windows update...wont update...tried reinstalling my chipset drivers...nothing

    i got a intel 845BG mobo
im considering moving the Sony to the LGs spot untill i fix the secondary IDE as a slave cuz that IDE channel seems to run DMA apparently according to my Nero INfo tool

how do i fix my ide[without formatting which i know will fix it]?
how come i didnt have aspi drivers?
how do i switch normally to DMA without the uninstall IDE?

    Help would be greatly appreciated

did you try just selecting it first

you just select it in the drop down window and reboot

you dont always have to un-install the secondary IDE channel to enable DMA mode

are you running the dvd rom drive off the primary channel?
    or is that a mis-quote?

    kevblack,
try some different media Those cheap ones you are using are more than likely the problem.

    Quote from ScubaPete:
USE Sony, TDK, Ritek G04, Ridata, Verbatim "DataLife", Verbatim DataLife "Plus", media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO Dye, Taiyo Yuden's and generally, almost any discs manufactured by Mitsubishi are excellent bets.

Also, edit your Nero Serial Numbers from your post!
    Cheers,
    Frank

i was running my LG DVD-ROM off the primary IDE channel, it isnt using DMA either, but i switched it lastnight so now

    Primary:
    Samsung HD [master]
    Sony DVD-RW [slave]
Secondary: [this channel wont install, so LG doesnt work]
    LG DVD-ROM [master]

and i did try selecting DMA and restarting, no dice.

id like to set the sony to DMA still
