Microsoft's November Patch Tuesday is a whopper

MICROSOFT IS OFFERING a bumper crop of security patches next week as part of its traditional Patch Tuesday fix fiesta.

A total of 16 patches are on the way this month, five of which are labelled 'Critical'. All five affect Windows and one also involves Internet Explorer.

Office, Exchange, Server and the .NET framework also have fixes. Five patch remote code execution exploits, seven tackle issues of elevated permissions, two fix security bypasses, one fixes a denial of service flaw and one plugs an information leak.

In addition, there'll be the usual update for the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Although there is a bit more than usual to contend with here, there is no evidence of anything that will cause the world to implode. Providing that timely updates occur, everything will be both hunky and dory.

The Windows 10 Developer Preview is also included in the patch fun, showing that even the most bleeding edge Redmond technology is fallible.

In analysing the list, Wolgang Kandek, CEO of Qualys, said: "Overall it will be a busy month for IT admins, plus we do not know when security advisory 3010060 from October 21 will be addressed.

"That advisory covered a vulnerability in the OLE packager that is in use in the wild, but I am not sure we will see a patch for it this month."

Microsoft hasn't had much luck with Patch Tuesdays over the summer. Two of the previous three contained errors that caused Blue Screen of Death problems, while last month's led to some users having to restore their systems from backup media.
