missing sound -new user please help

i am using windows xp , and have downloaded from kazaa xvid and avi movies
i can play these in windows media but once i convert them in tmpeg
the picture quality is good but no sound at all
please advise , ive tried reading threads
but still cannot fix

sound is working and my kids will get chance to see me
