julieann, you really shouldn't have to do anything in Device Manager. However, after you install the USB Modem Drivers for your phone AND your phone is connected via the data cable to your USB port, then if Mobile Phone Tools do not work, you can try changing the COM port assigned to your phone in Device Manager.

Julieann and others, check out this page:
    http://motorola.custhelp.com/cgi-bi...1&p_userid=35&p_passwd=kFfN9oXjwolRbj/YnWDhC.

Scroll down near the bottom where it says "Guides" and under it, Getting Started w/ Data Cable Pg. 1 and then Getting Started w/ Data Cable Pg. 2. These are one page PDF files from Motorola describing the steps of the installation process.

Also, at the very bottom of that site there is a small section called "Related Answers." The second "Answer" is "If the phone cannot be communicated with for syncing, or MPT can't find the phone, what's the first option to troubleshoot (device manager, modem diagnostic, etc)?" Check it out. Pretty good info.

I wish that this forum allowed you to create a Link Name instead of having to post these loooong URLs. Now I've screwed up the screen. LOL

MOBILE PHONETOOLS does not work with my Motorola V220 Phone.

    System Specs:

    Windows 2000 Desktop SP4 , Windows XP Laptop SP1
    512MB RAM, Athlon

    Problem:

After a LONG initialization time (and lots of hard disk swapping), I can use the basic functions but I CANNOT seem to use the multimedia studio. I get a message saying 'process failed', and i cannot list anything off the root directory of the phone.

Tried Mobile Phonetools, using the *exact* method as described in these forums (i.e., live update to the latest version, tried also downloading the 3.11 Final release). Nothing seems to work!!

Tried on my laptop as well (using Windows XP SP1) and that appears to be doing the same thing. I notice in the 'modem status' where the AT initialization codes are sent, there are often codes sent to the phone where the phone responds with an 'ERROR' message. Could this be contributing to it?

Overall the mobile phonetools product seems to be very shi* in design.

    Any suggestions?

okay...so i know mpt will NOT work with windows 98...and only with win 98se and up...and if it is only software related...is there any way to download needed software to win 98 to make mpt work with win 98?
what can be such a difference it making it work...i really cannot afford to buy a new operating system or the upgrade (very tight budget in family right now) so if there is any way...please let me know...thnx.

    RESPONSE TO MY OWN POST:

Figured out the problem. Actually not sure what made it work, but I decided to COMPLETELY push in the USB connector into the phone, and manually hold it in so that it was not even the slighest protruding outwards.

This made the difference. It allowed me to access the root directory of the phone. Strange.

Transferred ring tones perfectly fine now.

    CORRUPT MP3 RINGTONES ANSWER:

Problem #1: Bitrate should not be more than 64kbps, and do not use VBR (variable bit rate encoding).

Problem #2: Do not copy directly to the audio directory. Instead, use the "transfer" button on the menu bar once you select your mp3. This will make it work.

Just a freindly reminder folks - no posting email addies as per forum rules. Use the pm function. It's at the top right of every post and looks like this -----> [IMG]

    [bold]MPT Works!!!!![/bold]

I'm an imigrant from the PS2 forums, but I'm also a motorola v220 owner, and I have been running in to many of the problems listed in this forum.

Finally after literally hours and hours of installing/uninstalling/downloading/updating my mobile phone tools works with all the features (calendar, media browser, phone book etc).

So here's how it worked for me, hopefully it'll get some other users on track with their phones. BTW I'm running Windows XP SP2.

First I downloaded the following files from assorted websites (I suggest http://www.filemirrors.com/ for finding files on the net, or searching the forums can give you speedy results, usually works well for me) anyway...

The P2K drivers my file is called
    P2K.zip

Mobile Phone Tools 1 my file is called
    Motorola_MobilePhoneTools_1.23c_EN.zip

Motorola Phone Tools 2 my file is called
    mobilePhoneTools_2.21b_US.exe

Now, if you are like me you have probably installed and uninstalled your phone and the MPT's many times, and windows will not notice your phone as new hardware when you connect it to the usb cable. For now keep your phone disconnected!

What I did was go into the device manager and locate the motorola usb modem which most likely will still be installed (if it isn't installed then windows should recognize it and ask you about drivers which is covered in the next step).

Select update driver and tell it to search where you have unpacked the p2k driver. It will say something about the software not being digitally signed but continue anyway.

Now go to your unpacked MPT1 and install it normally using the setup.exe.

Start up phone tools, and it should ask you how you will connect your phone, select usb cable, and then connect the phone. You should see a little clock. Keep clicking next, and after doing some tests, it will say that it couldn't recognize your phone. Select any phone from the list it gives you, I picked the T720 (I think) and finish the setup.

When MPT starts up it won't connect and you won't be any further and you'll probably hate me, but hold on...

    Disconnect your phone again.

Now run the setup for MPT2, it will do it's updating and all that good stuff, nothing required from you.

Connect your phone and run MPT, you'll notice that the phone that comes up is still the T720 (or whatever phone you picked early), fear not. Disconnect your phone, select menu->setup->new phone, then select usb cable and then reconnect your phone. If all goes well you'll see the spinning clock again, and your v220 will appear on your monitor. Then if you are like me say a prayer and start using MPT in all it's fully functional glory.

Hope this helps somebody, I know I've been helped on many occasions.

[bold]**Edit** I just installed MPT 3 and everything is fine for me, just follow the setup.exe for it.

Thanks! Your instructions worked perfectly. I could never get the phone image to change either. Transfer of MP3's works great and now I can use them as ringtones. I was using PK2 to transfer but they wouldn't appear in my ringtone list.
