No need to apologise mate. You give a lot of help on this forum and untold people must be up and running thanks to you. I think you've accumilated a lot of knowledge about the SV.

I do think you get a bit technical though without realising it. When I found this forum I didn't have a clue about any of this and I think there must be a lot of lurkers out there wondering if their laptop has a "DB9 interface" and getting a bit worried. Although they probably know if they have a Serial Port or not.

lol I work in the industry if you know what I mean and I do get a bit techie at times. Must calm that down lol. So many questions from different levels I never check to see if they are from new or regular posters, my pm box gets quite full of people actually asking tech questions that I naturally overflow the same level of comments as I give them onto the open forum.

Must think laterally I suppose lol :)

    Answer courtesy of Lucid

    Select User Setup
Aspect ratio -Set it to either Letter screen of Full screen depending on your preference. (For older firmware set 4:3 if you have an older set or 16:9 if it's a widescreen.)

If you have a non widescreen 4:3 TV set it's best to use the letterbox setting. If you have a Widescreen then at the moment the 2.60 onwards firmware has a problem with displaying a full widescreen broadcast properly.

Although in order to correct this after switching from Letterbox to Fullscreen in the menu you must switch the box off at the back then back on again. Or in the menu/user setup alter the TV type by highlighting it then using the up volume arrow to change it. So just scroll the setting from PAL through NTSC & AUTO back to PAL. Then exit the menu. This has the same effect as power cycling the receiver. But then when a 4:3 programme is transmitted it will be output in its' true aspect by the starview which means when it is viewed on a Wide screen TV it will have black bars on the left & right of the picture.

The thing I notice is that on certain channels (i.e. ss1) the black lines are usually present but certain progs on the said channel display properly (i.e. without lines) so surely it cant be the settings.

and like I say mosty of the chnls are full screen only get bars on ss/sm.

ive already set the aspect ratio to 4:3 as i dont have a ws tv.

so what do you reckon. I was led to believe that this was jst a prob with the sv which everyone encountered and that it could not be fixed???

    Any ideas?

Basically it is not just down to the way both the TV and SV handle the picture. As you have said some if not most channels are OK, the remaining few are just broadcast in a different way. I suppose it is something that will have to be incorporated into the next upgrade of the gen SV boxes.
