    I have an iRiver h140 mp3 player

Got loads of mp3 albums on it

I want to alter the general gain so that all albums play at approximately the same volume

Ive figured out that I get minimal clipping at around 93.5

Some of the albums are already higher than this figure
    eg some are at 97

Even at 93.5 some tracks are clipping

Do I really need to alter the gain so I have no clipping

    Or is some clipping ok

    Thx

The amount of clipping will depend on how the track was encoded in the first place. Some encoders will allow significant clipping, if the person doing it sets up the configuration badly.

There's a lossless tool called mp3Gain available free at http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/

It will automatically normalise your tracks to remove clipping without reducing clarity.
