What dvd blank media are you using , also what software are you using to author/compress etc ??

What burner are you using , and what O/S & whether fat32 or NTFS ??

A rough PC spec might also help ...

hmm ... well I would always suggest better media other than TDK's
For example Ritek G04/G05 or Taiyo Yuden , Verbatim DataLifePlus :)

I use those discs in my Pioneer 104 and all is cool , I forget which firmware I have installed but would find out if you needed to know.

Also there can be times when you think you have uninstalled things , but there can be remnants left in the registry on O/S drive ;-)

I would suggest DVD Shrink & DVD Decrypter combo as software choice myself...

ah sorry , f/w is firmware [I have looked & it is 1.40 RPC1 that I have installed on my Pioneer 104] & o/s is operating system [ie; WinXP] :)

so do the back ups your burning have the same problem in everything you have tried to play them in [other than your DVD Player] ... is it happening on PC playback aswell ?

best blank disc to use are the Ritek G04-G05 or Taiyo Yuden in my truly honest opinion ... I've only ever heard of problems w/ TDKs (you could always search the media thread to see what media is problematic) ; ]-~

What are you using to view DVDs on PC [PowerDVD / WinDVD] ?

Did you recently install WinXP SP2 update ??

It sounds like it is a hardware problem from what you've described so far ...

I'm having similar problems, my backups are freezing and breaking up. It seem to happen near the end of the movie most of the time. I'm using TDK 4X AND PHILLIPS 8X having same problem with both media. I used dvdxcopy platinum to backup, then I tried using nero ultra to make the copies

6foot7 , damn thats tall ...I'm 6' 3" and even that can be a hindrance at times [lol]:)

Right as stated I wouldnt trust TDK myself , but not tried any Philips media but I still wouldn't purchase them either.
Ritek G04-G05 / Taiyo Yuden / Verbatim DataLifePlus

It is definitely a media or firmware problem 6foot7 (and I'd be inclined to think it's the media myself)

I take it you've tested your freezing back ups in another dvd player just to check etc , and the same thinig is happening ?

BY THE WAY! While making backups using nero I was doing it "ON THE FLY" instead of copying it to the harddrive first. Would this make a difference?
For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about it means that I was copying from one dvd burner to another.

Yes it could well be due to burning on-the-fly ... it's not advised unless your PC has the spec to deal w/ the data transfer rate.
