check in device manager to see if there is a yellow exclamation mark. also when starting the computer, does the cdrom showup with the floppy drive, hd & whatever??

in the bios of the motherboard see if the cdrom is identified or use a win98 or me bootdisk & select #1 for cdrom support. it will than check if there is a cdrom drive connected or not. also reseat the data cable from the cd drive & motherboard
