Well, I know what the problem is!
A few entries ago I mentioned that I had formatted the harddrive and the blank DVDs were working fine. Then, the very first program I installed was DVDshrink from this website (downloads section), and I put a blank DVD in the drive and nothing came up on the screen, just that anoying swish-swish sound every few second. So, I went to control panel, uninstalled DVDshrink and deleted it from My Doctuments (where I saved it to) and the blank DVDs still don't work. I'll have to format the harddrive AGAIN and this time stay away from DVDshrink.
Any idea why this might be happening?
What is the best way to make copies of my movies without DVDshrink?

DVDShrink is really old. Try DVDFab.

If you put a disc in, open Imgburn and select the write mode, does ImgBurn report any disc?

Do you have adequate virus protection??? You may have a virus. And that's what started the problem.

wm17959 my guess is the preloaded software on you're machine brings up

    "Open writable CD folder
    Burn a CD
    Add Files
Record, edit and create DVD Movies
    Take no action'

it has to be a program bringing this info up ^^

THEN when you load dvd shrink its over riding the program that brings up that info.

FYI nero is an good program kinda of bloated though, if you're burning just one dvd/cd at a time imgburn is very good and highly recommend

Go to my computer. Then right click on your dvd drive and select properties. Then select autoplay and see what it is set at.

I looked into it and I see the same menu that pops up on the screen when everything is working fine. The selection is on 'Prompt me each time to choose an action'. The problem is that when the menu does not appear after putting in a blank DVD the computer thinks the drive is empty. When I want to burn something it keeps telling me to put a medium into the drive. The only way I know it's working properly is when that menu appears.

    ZoSoIV:
I use Nero for all my burning, not just movies. I guess I should upload imgburn and use it just for the movies.

Here's something that puzzles me; I uploaded DVDshrink and then uninstalled it. I thought by uninstalling it removes every part of the program, so why don't the bank DVDs work after I do this? The only way I can restore my system is by formatting, which is what I'm going to do now.

What is strange is that I had DVDshrink on my computer for a long time, and everything worked fine. Then, a few months ago I started having this problem.

This could very well be the problem. Without a log file, everyone is just guessing.

Would formatting the harddrive not clean any viruses off? What is a 'log file'?

The program keeps a record of what's going on and some system specs. This is called a log.

No, I don't have decent anti-virus protection. A guy at work gave me 'Avast', which I installed but then I took it off because it made my dial-up connection even slower than it is normally. I would pay for a decent anti-virus program, but only if it doens't slow things down.

I just re-formatted my harddrive and it was a complete reformatting. Then I put in a blank DVD and it worked fine, the menu poped up, it was all good. Then, before going online, I installed CCleaner and ran it, and I also uploaded my Internet favourits to the favourits folder from a back-up disc, and I did not go online so there's no way I could have picked up a virus. Then I tried the blank DVD again and it didn't work. I now think that it has nothing to do with DVDshrink as i suspected yesterday, but maybe it any activity at all that screws the machine up, so I am now going to take another aproach.

When I do the reformatting there are 7 CDs that must be uploaded. The first one contains all the boot information, and the second one is a 'suplemental' disc and before I uploade it the system asks me if I have one, or I can also just skip it and move on to the main 5 disks. I now feel that this 'suplemental' disc may contain the specific information for 'Lenovo', and maybe by not uploading this disc I might be better off. So I'm going to send a message to Lenovo (IBM) but I will have to pay for the answer to my question.

I only hope you never bank online, or purchase anything with a credit card online, or have any important info on your pc, because sooner or later your pc will be phoning someone else's with your info. Why try to fix a problem when you will have more in front of you with no virus and I assume firewall protections.

I see your point. I just don't know why everything was working and now it isn't even though I haven't changed anything.

What anti-virus software do you recommend?

I've been using Norton Internet Security 2009 it slows somewhat but not much, unlike previous versions from Norton. It's not free.

I think I put AVG on my daughter's pc. It's working fine and it's free. I will ask her when I see her tonight if CRS syndrome doesn't set in. LOCOENG had recommended it. You got to have something. I'm not saying you do have a virus or trojan or something but you still need the protection. Paid or Free.

    Thanks ZoSoIV,
I still don't think this is virus related because I had the problem right after formatting and before I went online. Unless the virus is embeded in one of my favourits entries.
How much will an anti-virus program slow my dial-up access system down?

You have been asked twice to try ImgBurn.
    Install the program.
Put a blank in the drive.
    Open ImgBurn.
Copy the log file and paste it here.

programs like Trend Micro or avg are less intrusive than Norton (can be a system hog) and won't slow down you're system. I'm pretty sure Trend Micro has a free trial if you want to try it.
