O.K. dialysis1. I downloaded that file and upgraded my optical drive, re-booted my computer but sadly my blank DVD is still behaving the same way.

but at least you've got the better firmware when you ultimately get the problem solved!

This is not just one brand of DVD. And they work after I format the hard drive, but once I've loaded any programs related to the Internet they don't.

The computer still thinks the drive is empty. When I put a disc in it make that swish-swish sound over and over until I eject the disc. I'm using the DVD+ discs. Would it make a difference if I used the DVD-? I've always used these and it they used to work fine.

I had purchased a package of Memorix DVD+ at Wal-Mart, but then I started having these problems after I used about 3 or 4 of the discs. I thought it was a bad batch of discs so I took them back and got some Maxell DVD+ blanks, but they don't work either. I was thinking of going through the whole stack of 50 discs to see if any of them work but I might just be waisting my time.

It's probably not the discs since you have uptodate firmware. In the future buys verbatim or online TYs or media made in Japan Sony also good. I doubt that+R or -R would change anything. Your burner can handle both. Is there anyway you could borrow a SATA burner and replace yours and see if that changes anything?

    O.K. I'm back.
I have formatted my hard drive again, but this time I did not install the 'suplemental' disc. Everything seemed to go smooth, but when I was done and put in a blank DVD, and this time it didn't work. I tried it a few times and it worked once, so now I'm thinking that it's a defective optical drive.
I discussed this with my computer retialer, but he was of no help. all he said is that he can sell me a new drive for $40, but I don't really want to get a cheep one. Any recommendations?
Also: I have this anoying virus called, "System Security Version 4.51" that keeps popping up. It's even prevented me from accessing the 'add/remove' section of the control panel. Any idea on how I can get rid of this?

Yes, but then I went online and I must have thought it was part of the operating system, so I clicked on it. It said I have 32 dangerous viruses but I found that hard to believe after having just formatted. Good thing I've got everything backed up already because I may have to format again. This thing won't even let me open Word files, Excel or anything. I would like to get some kind of anti-vurus program, but I have dial-up and it will be even slower than it already is.

Removed link due to just one of those sites mentioned below after reading the page.

Edit: I went back and read the site so I wouldn't use it because you will have to give them money-use google and find where you can remove it easily

Above is a how to remove the malware you got when checking your pc on line by clicking on their checker. I imagine anyone who checks with any site is going to be told they have issue so they can sell you software to correct their crap. The internet is a dangerous place without in place GOOD security for viri and a firewall that works. Spend some money and correct that problem and maybe it will correct the other one. Don't pay $40 for a drive go to newegg.com and get yourself a 7240SATA Optiarc-NEC burner-below link to it for $27shipped. I have this drive also but have not used it but it is getting rave reviews.
