Good catch syxguns!! I didn't notice that.

Please, you must use Internet Explorer to update it.

IE7 is still in the Beta (testing) stage. I wouldn't recommend it at this time. After we get all the problems solved, then an update to that would be OK.

RE: No IE on account, can't be sure but you may not have IE enabled for access, clik on "start" look for "set program access and defaults" (should be below control panel if you have it to show if not, clik on "start" then right clik on any free space then clik "properties" ,"start menu tab", "customise", "advanced" use scroll box and tick "set progs access and defaults" then clik ok then apply it will now be in the start menu list) now after ciking on access in the start panel list clik "custom" in the window that opens tick the box to enable access to IE ,if you still can't access IE go into add/remove look at left for "add/remove window components" put a tick in the IE box and clik next etc and then make sure IE is able to be accessed in set progs and defaults

As for WININET.dll chances are one of the malwares had embedded itself and using avg it in advertantly damaged that prog, i'll leave that fix for dolphin2 ,tho you should be able to undo any changes by using avg's reinstall feature as by rights it should create a backup of what it deletes

Just a quick question does your harddrive have two partitions the one i'm asking about should be around 5GB in size

dolphin2 i asked the above question of jelly as it will be a recovey partition assuming there is one,as you know comps these days come prebundled with that partition in case of emergencies by using F10 ??,
it will automatically put the comp back to it's factory shipped condition (there's two options a full reformatt and reinstall or just a i think it's software and drivers only but leaves any other installed software folders there but will need to be reinstalled ),don't mean to stand on your toes i just figured if worst comes to worst it is just another option :D

PS: jelly once your backup and running amok on the web :p,i advise you to learn a bit more about security best practices while surfing, some sites that have free newsletters and will give you a bit of knowledge on what to look out for, just google for the stuff below as they all have helpfull info emails and great software downloads tho some software is not free
    microsoft security newsletter
    pc mechanic
cnet = they have numerous news letter emails and there articles on protecting ones self from viruses and spyware.
    pc world
    info packets gazette
    extremetech.com
    techrepublic

lastly you need to be careful installing 3rd party software like coolwebsearch and all other software unless you know the site, you can always google and ask "is coolwebsearch spyware" also quickly browse thru the ULA of the software look for key words like, tracking cookies ,collect info etc, don't get me wrong such wording doesnt mean it's all bad as some products require such installs for auto updating etc you'll understand what i mean and you'll pick up the bad software the more experianced you become, smelling a rat will become 2nd nature

Do [bold] NOT [/bold] reinstall things with AVG. You'll only be putting the virus' back into your system.

What has happened is exactly what scorpNZ said, quote "As for WININET.dll chances are one of the malwares had embedded itself and using AVG it in advertantly damaged that" unquote.

I hope you have a Windows CD. If you do, insert it into the tray. Close down the spash screen that opens. Goto Start > Run. Type in "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). When it is completed, it will just close. It will take awhile, so go get a drink and snack. :)

EDIT: If you don't have the Windows CD do the following:
1>In My Computer go to: C:\Windows\System32.
    2>Locate the WININET.dll
3>Right click and rename it to Wininet.dl
4>Close down all open programs and reboot
Windows will reinstall the WINENET.dll automatically

Internet Explorer should be located at "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" Locate it from there and run it to do the updates. It will say it isn't the default and do you want to set it as, your choice.

    @scorpNZ
At this point, we don't want to do a format or reinstall. There would be to many things lost and reinstalling doesn't alway solve problems. Sometimes it creates more!

Don't worry about "standing on my toes". I always welcome other methods of fixing problems. My methods aren't always the best, or the easist.

    WININET.dll is found under c:\windows\system32

Open windows explorer to locate the file. This may give you an easier method of seeing it. Then follow dolphin2 explanation of changing the file name.

@dolphin2- I didn't even know that! See teach and learn! I'm glad that you noticed there wasn't a AV on the machine. Looks like there are more problems then I originally anticipated!

    EDIT: was to correct quote!

You will not find it using run. You have to use search or look in the path you were given.

    -----
    @syxguns
The dll in question is a Windows system file used to connect to the internet. Windows will replace most system files on it's own if found missing on start-up. Key word there being most!

Once we get the AV problems solved the next step is to get a firewall up and running. Then we can get back to removing all the malware that's still left.

    To find the .dll
    1-clik start
2-open "my computer" so you are shown all drives on your comp
3-open drive :C (you should see a few folders)
4-look for the folder WINDOWS (if it's not there. Look at the left side column clik "unhide contents")
5-open WINDOWS folder and scroll down for the folder "system32" once you've found it you can use the search function or do it manually to locate the .dll ,it is also possable to download a replacement at http://www.dll-files.com/

[bold]Try not to surf the Internet.[/bold] When you do you will continue to build upon your list of objects that need to be removed. Try to keep your Internet activity limited until we have time to get the problems resolved.

scorpNZ is right. That is another way to detect the file you are looking for. Just make sure to select, "Show All Folders". I am just use to using windows explorer.

We need to start from scratch to get your machine fixed. Make sure you have the latest updates for you Ad-Aware, Spybot, and AV. If you don't have it, you may obtain windows defender at windows.com. Reboot your machine in [bold]safe mode[/bold]. In safe mode start up programs won't run!

Now run all the programs I mentioned. The last one to run is your anti-virus. Last but not least when you are done running all the programs run another HjT. Save the log then reboot the machine in to standard mode. give us the HjT log to look at. If you have any viruses that you are not able to remove please include the virus name and location. i.e. c:\windows\system32\virus_name

Do not worry about the fact that pictures are not showing in your browser. The first thing that we have got to do is clean your machine. If you did not notice my posting before, try to stay off the internet. This is where any viruses and maleware root from. We need to get your system clean and then we will address the other issues. Okay!

    Thanks

I was about to advise just wait a lttle longer for us to help out, then i looked at the date when this topic was started and i thnk it would be best to start over and there's more reasons to do so other than viruses etc but that's another story, any data you need will need to be saved to rom and before reinstall the disk must be opened and scanned with the virus scanner,i would advise not to save any software utility's unless you know for sure they're safe

once reformatted and before connecting to the net you'll need to make sure you have the firewall enabled(look in network connections to enable xp's firewalled connection untill you have time to get a zonalarm firewall or any othervfree two way software firewall if you don't already have such software saved),and then head straight to microsoft update site and do not leave untill all updates are installed, next you'll need antivirus if you have'nt managed to successfully download avg or something similar,if you do have antivirus downloaded save it to rom and install after installing windows.
use xp's disk cleanup utility and defrag after xp is installed, and then again after each 3-4 software installs

    Avg -free antivirus
zonealarm or similar two way free software firewall

you'll need after above updates etc all are free for personal use
    windows defender
    adaware SE
    Spybot
Do not install any toolbars other than or what is recommended at cnet
    Yahoo
    Google
    Stumbleupon
    Printme
    etc

go get yourself a free safe registry cleaner called
    easycleaner by toni arts
    and
ccleaner -becareful this ones a bit more vigorous at deleting registry entries

You'll need to update AOL software if you reinstall it, as it's got as many holes in it as xp does

ok^ Just to let you know. The wininet problem is gone. No more pop ups. My internet page is working fine now(had no problems trying to get online today to get here). Plus I was finally able to update my internet explorer 5 to internet explorer 6. I did the scans on safe mode in order :)

    First...Ccleaner scan(safe mode)
    Second...Cwshredder scan(safe mode)
    Third...Ad-Aware scan(safe mode)
Fourth...Spybot Search scan(not in safe mode) Does that matteR? forgot about it and didn't feel like goin back to safe mode.
Fifth...House call scan froze on me during scan. Im gonna try to do it one more time since i updated my Internet explorer. By the way i cant do this in safe mode because for some odd reason safe mode does not allow me use the internet. I remember using the internet on safe mode before.
Sixth...AVG Free Scan(safe mode)It picked up 3,400 viruses! It removed every single one of them except for the 3 trojans that were still left. I search comp for the trojan files and deleted them. I did another scan it discovered 0 viruses. The trojan viruses were finally gone. But however...my Petition table(MBR) resulted in a error, Also my Boot Sector C: read an error during the scan. Im assuming that this is causing my driver problems.

Seventh...HiJack Scan(safe mode) Im not sure if your gonna want the log because i still havent done the housecall scan yet. Im gonna try one more time if it doesn't work i'll post up the HiJack Log after i do all the scan over again.

You will not be able to use the internet in safe mode unless you chose that option. However, the reason for using safe mode is so that the start up programs won't run.

You said that you went in and deleted the Trojans yourself. Well, that is not necessarily going to get rid of them. Follow the previous instructions step by step in safe mode again. Tell me the files or Trojans that AVG recognized and could not get rid of. See most virus problem occur within your registry. Unless you remove them properly, they will still exist.

Go through it one more time. Don't worry about the HjT log yet. We will do that after we know the viruses are gone. This is step by step maintenance that should be done regularly, however, not in this great of detail!
