I have had a similar problem:
I Got a New DELL not so long ago and i reformatted the hard drive, And did everything as usual. When i turned on my computer The screen was huge the resolution is 640 by 480 pixels and the slider on the that normally Changes the resolution wont move at all so the screen is to big and everything is jammed onto my 17" monitor. I read a Tutorial on M$'s site and it said i had to click the advanced tab and select the correct monitor type but for some reason the Properties button under the Monitor tab in the Display properties thing is non accessable. It is kinda faded and i can't click it. I Have no idea what went wrong or how to fix it. could someone help?.

Did you install the graphics drivers? maybe there is a partition on your hard drive with these on.. (Dell somtimes do that) or on another CD...

They might have the model number printed on sticker on the case... Usually on the rear...
