Sounds to me like a few points need clarification:

    1. He stated he is burning mpeg to disk. Therefore, a data disc burn only is the issue (not dvd-authoring for top set dvd player playback)

    2. DMA not enabled, but DMA will revert to PIO mode after a set number of mistakes unless you do this workaround. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817472#kb4 for helping making sure it stays in DMA mode once you do change it.
    a. Check your bios settings for DMA mode settings. It can be set to PIO mode (wrong one) there too!

    3. Search for firmware updates for your burner. Use caution, double check, then check again that you update with the correct firmware. A good Google search will find what you need or confirm you have what you need already.

Hope this helps. Just seemed the issue was getting confused.

NO! You do not want to burn a multisession.

multi-session is for when you are testing using a -RW or +RW media & might possibly want to add more at a later date [thus the dis is not finalized]

    Dear ScubaPete Diary,

Today Herbs came out of hiding from his private lair somewhere in the outskirts of one of England's few remaining cities still populated by humanoids and posted to aD.

It has prompted me to check other signs and symptoms, to sea if indeed the world really is coming to an end ~

The age-old question remains, did he conclude his acquisition of the "Super Computer" he had been trying to negotiate from ddlooping and is dd still living ? Enquiring minds want to know . . .

    [bold]lmfao[/bold]

I didn't obtain/purchase the so called super computer in the end Pete , it was found to be lacking in one particular area [max of x4 burn-a-bility].
I saw Denis maybe a month or two ago , t'was in KFC [finger lickin' good] and seemed in fine fettle :)
Dunno if it was his g/f with him , but there was a lovely looking young lady on his arm ... whom seemed to be giving him the 'come see me under the palm tree' eyes

Anyway Id better mention something to with the thread at hand , errrrmmm ... oh yeah !! You do definitely want to have your DVD drive(s) set to DMA Enabled [is a pre-requisite for trouble free DVD ripping & burning].

*[bold]prerequisite[/bold]: (noun [C] FORMAL) something which must exist or happen before something else can exist or happen
    - Passing a written exam is a prerequisite for taking the advanced course.
Public support is a prerequisite for/to the success of this project.
They had to agree to certain conditions as a prerequisite of being lent the money.

Oh & hope you're keeping well btw Scooby dooby doo : ]-~
(just done a fresh install of WinXP & plugged headset in the other day , so I'll Skype you up at some point yeah bud)

    Richard

    @ celtic200,

Right-click My Computer - click, Properties - click, Hardware - click, Device Manager - DVD / CD ROM drives, right-click your burner, uninstall. - click -OK then all OK's to reboot your PC (Ignore all warnings). When your PC reboots it will re-install your drive and re-set the drive to DMA. Trust me, this works !

Please let me know what OS you have . . .

Here are a few screenshots for enabling DMA in Windows XP (Your burn log indicates this is what you are using ;)).

This is what my device manager looks like, yours should be similar.

By clicking on the + The IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers open. You are interested in the IDE Channels:

Double click the Secondary IDE Channel to open the Properties menu:

Click on the Advanced Settings tab:

This is where you change your DMA settings:

Click the Transfer Mode dropdown menu and select "DMA if available':

Make sure it shows in the Current Transfer Mode window. Default DMA settings are OK. In this case it shows Ultra DMA Mode 2

That completed "Device 0", Moving on to Device 1.....Click the Dropdown menu...

Select "DMA if available" from the menu

make sure it shows in the Current Transfer Mode window.

    When done click OK!

Notice that we only did the secondary IDE Channel. Both the Primary and Secondary Channels should be set to "DMA if available" Make sure you do both channels. The procedure is the same for both.

When everything is set correctly, reboot and then go back in to make sure the settings held.

If these settings do not hold or stay then delete as ScubaPete described.

You must have noticed that the only choice you are given is "DMA if available"...Setting the type of DMA you use is more a system configuration function.
Depending on how your system is set up, different modes of DMA are available.

You job is just to enable it so you have some sort of DMA enabled. The mode is not important at this point.

Once you have your DMA settings correct, we can work on the other issues.

Getting your mpegs converted into a DVD-Video compliant folder.

And the correct settings for burning with Nero. One thing at a time though.

    Frank

It might help if you answered the questions you were asked.

    "What OS do you use?"

If you are using WinXP , right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager > CD/DVD Drives [right click & uninstall the problem drive ... Okay].

Repeat if need be until the drive is recognized as DMA enabled.

    It [bold]does[/bold] work celtic :)

For some reason you don't seem to give us much to go on. You say something does not work but give no details.....it's like if I said "my program does not run...Why?"

In other words we need to narrow things down to where the problem is. We need you to tell us in detail what happens and if someone has given you steps to follow, tell us at what step you have the problem and be specific. The more you tell us the easier it is to help.

I really do not like one line answers. Write more! give us something to go on. We cannot read your mind or see your screen!

BTW your OS is Win XP....it is in your Nero log.

Your best bet is to take your PC back . . .

It is the only XP computer on the planet that doesn't have a Device Manager.

Glad to see you treated everyone else that tried to help you with as much courtesy and feedback as you did me -

With a few more pple like this, forums could well shut down as those with the answers just won't be bothered.

    heheh I quite agree Pete.

Due to contempt shown by thread originator , it is now closed

Plus many more threads like this from said user & they may find they have no account next time they 'try' to sign in to aD forum(s).
