My mum's PC is driving both her and myself up the wall! Now and again when she accesses her control panel on her home system, the searching torch appears. Apologies but I have tried a search on afterdawn and I could not track anything specific down (probably due to my newness). Dr Watson's debugger said C:\Document~1\joan\Locals~1\WERO439dir00\dwtsn32exe.mdmp and WER0439.dir00\appcompat.txt as the problem children.

Could anyone offer me any advice please. Thanx

Try defragging or using scandisk and see if that helps.

    p4_tt,
Thanx for taking the time to reply. We performed a defrag and a check now on the C drive. It did highlight an error and so say corrected it. The Control panel was absolutely fine for about 24 hours then started to play up again. We performed a Spybot check and this reported a serious error with one of the files (HKEY_Classes_Root\clsid\(99180163-DA16-101a-9). Can any body recommend a free worthy registry checker please.

Thanx everyone for you help. We went to that site and purchased Registry Mechanic for £20. It cured all the problems. My Mum's PC has now been discharged from hospital and is working fine again now. Just a shame we could only use it on one PC.

My Laptop is networked to my Mum's PC when I visit so I dragged and installed it to mine. It fixed so many for free then you have to register to fix the rest. I tried entering my mum's registration number but it wasn't having none of it. Shame, thanx for helping. Kind Regards.
