my telewest virgin box stolen, so got one from carboot but not working - its NTL pace

As the title says, I had a break in and my virgin box was stolen with my smartcard. Rang up virgin to tell them and they said a new one would cost £150 for box and £50 for card. Too much for me as I wasn't even insured. Anyway got one from the car boot for £5, but its not working, its flashes pace, then NTL then err 16. Can anybody advise what i need to do. It does have a smart card in there. All I want is my basic channels back. Thanks in advance.
