OK, I have been using Nero 7 for a little while now and have had some difficulty but for the most part have managed to do what I needed it to do. However, I have not backed up a DVD in quite some time (extended vacation to Iraq) but now I just can't seem to get the program to work.

I am trying to back up a Disney DVD for my kid (she typically wears them out after a few months).

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Bulldog6
The media you're using from what I can find is only rated to burn at 2.4x but from the log looks like it can be overburned to 4x.
Take the burn speed down to 2.4x. Ritek is decent but for dual layer Verbatim would be the best.

Try to burn w/ ImgBurn. Good free burning program that does a better job w/ dual layer imho. Here's a guide also - link.

    CdRomPeripheral : TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-C2612 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
Not playing into this error but turn DMA back on for this drive - link

    Physical memory : 510MB
    Free physical memory: 87MB
    Memory in use : 82 %

Alot of memory is in use so no multitasking and close any unneeded programs.

Give that a go and let us know.

OK, I adjusted the DVD drive. Then I closed all other programs. Then I tried to burn at a lower speed. However, it won't let me choose anything other than 4x. I will try again and then try imageburn.

I have tried imageburn before but will try again with your guide.

    Thanks

Just noticed this - Adapter driver: <USB 1.0>
Is the drive connected by usb 2.0 or usb 1.1?

If it's usb 1.1 dual layer may not be the best best for burning.

Have any problems with single layer media? Try taking this video and opening it in recode to compress and burn to a single layer dvd.

Yes, the drive won't recognize the single layer Fuji DVD-R discs that I have. It's also a USB not USB 2.0. Old computer. Waiting for a little bit longer to upgrade.

I don't get it. I've burned SL and DL DVD's before. But since getting back I have had no luck. Both ImgBurn and Nero just keep giving me errors.

BTW, the DVD will fit on a SL disc but Nero won't recognize my SL discs and Imgburn recognizes them but gives me the same error I spoke about above.

Any other usb port you can try it in? If you do try that one.

Trying it if you can on another pc would be good too but ideally it should also be connected to a usb 1.1 port.

Try lightly blowing some canned air in the drive.

How about regular pc maintenance like disc cleanup, disc defrag, registry scan and virus scans. If they haven't been done recently do them. Here's a good free registry cleaner - ccleaner. Use the cleaner and issues options. It does a much better job imho than the disc cleanup utility in Windows.
If you haven't cleaned out the dust inside the case in awhile I'd do that too.

Another option would be to take it out of the enclosure and connect it to an ide cable - you should have a slot on the secondary one open.
If you do set the jumper pin on the back of the drive to match the connection on the ide cable - like master to master.

edit too add - almost forgot. If you have another usb cable try another one.

I've tried to lead a good life. I don't hurt small animals. I love my wife and kid. Aaarrgghh!

Ok, so from the above you have probably figured out that none of the above solutions worked.

I had several smaller peripherals plugged in using a hub. Pulled everything but my external and my burner. Switched cables with the burner and the external. Used CCleaner (which btw is a great app - my new favorite). Virus scan is run every night. Just defragged the harddrive a week ago. Cleaned the burner... and yet God continues to punish me.

It's almost worth it just to go by a new computer.

Anyway, here is the last log:

OK, so I may be narrowing down the problem. I moved the files from my external to the laptop hardrive and it got much further in the burn process about 30% of the way through. Here is the burn log. Again thanks in advance.

Well in the last log the burned last for almost an hour before it bombed and gave you the no seek complete error which could be a communication error. The usb port speed may be playing into that. I couldn't find anything on this drive saying it supports both 1.1 and 2.0 usb.
Check the minimum pc requirements too on this drive. It may be on a cd or manual that came with the drive. Most external 16x burners usually have a minimum requirement of 1.2 ghz cpu & 256 mb ram or higher.
You have the ram so check the cpu speed.

You can try ImgBurn again with a single layer and see if that makes a diff.
Next try some different media like Verbatim or made in japan Sony - go for the single layer. But check on the minimum requirements for the drive - if you're barely meeting them or below even new media would be hit or miss.

Doesn't look like you can connect this drive internally being a laptop might be a little hard :) (should have checked this 1st)

The laptop is a 1.6 GHz Celeron so that isn't it. I have had the computer for 4 or 5 years now and it it probably time to upgrade.

BTW, ImgBurn with SL media still isn't helping. I think I am just going to pack the burner up. Heading back to Iraq in a couple of days so when I get back I will just upgrade computers and either get one with a burner and sell the LG or keep it. Either way I just wanted to thank you for the help. Talk to you in 6 or 7 months.

You're welcome - I wish we could have solved this before you ship off again :(

It may just be the pc.

Take care over there and god bless.

Talk to ya when you get back!
