    hello all ,
    im in the process of gathering parts for a new pc build for my girl . i have been using sony burners for a while now and would like to give something else a try . ive been looking at the nec 3500a and the nec 3520a . i dont see any differences between these burners . nec's site doesnt show any info for 3520a . is this because its too new or what ? where would one update firmware for the 3520a ? also on zipzoomfly the 3500a costs more than 3520a . is the 3500a better ? newegg only offers the 3520a at this time . is the 3520a replacing the 3500a ? thanks for the help .

    I would think it's just the newer model.

    thanks flip218 . what are the features of your plextor that compelled you to buy it ? im open to trying one of them also . they cost a lot more . but what seperates it from the rest if anything ?
    im thinking about getting the nec because of the great reviews i have read about them . im going to look at some reviews for the plextor also . my girl doesnt do much with her machine so the nec will work out for her . i wouldnt mind trying the plextor on mine .

    the nec 3520 supports faster rw burning speeds. thats the only difference. i have the 3500 and i love it. besides personal preference, there is nothing that makes this burner any less desirable than any other model.

    @dlc2000,

    I went with the Plextor mainly because of the reputation. I had a TDK 840 (retagged Plextor 708A and loved it.)

    It is Plextor's first dual layer, so wanted to get it. I have a NEC 2510 in my other pc and have had no problems with it.

    thanks for the info . i will be ordering 2 of the nec 3520a's . they are only $62.99 from newegg right now . thats a pretty cheap price for a dvd burner . i hope they last a while as i only seem to beable to get a little over a year with the sony burners . the nec burners are only half the price of my sony . 2 for the price of one . balaam i hope im as happy as you with this burner . i have not read anything bad about them . one other thing , is there no support for the 3520a ? no info on nec's site on it . thanks

    @BigDJ163,
    I've had my nec3500 for almost 7 months, and have yet to have a coaster with anything I've burned, as long as I use good media. I don't have any experience backing up xbox games, but it has worked fine with my ps2 backups. I've used TY +, TDK - and ritek G04 - media for my backups with fine results.

    @dlc2000,
    The programer and beta testers of DVD Decrypter recommended this drive, thats how I made my choice, and while I do some pretty heavey burning, they do even more, with no problems reported. I burn at least 10-15 dvds a week, for about 7 months now, and it still works like a charm. About the support issue, the drive is still very new, been out a couple weeks, so there isn't yet a need for firmware updates etc. And since the 3520 only updates the rw burning speed, the info for the 3500 on the nec website, pertaining to media compatability etc, is most likely still applicable.

    thanks for all the info guys , i ordered the nec 3520a and the plextor 716a today . also a 50 pack of taiyo yuden 8x dvd+r's . the plextor drive cost more than the nec drive and the media together . i hope its worth the cash . it also costs more than my sony drive . but hopefully it will last longer than my sony drives . i have been going through a sony drive a year lately .
    i have one last question about the nec 3520a . does nero support this drive yet ? i dont see it listed on the list of supported drives on nero's site . has anyone used nero with this drive yet . the retail drive comes with roxio software which im not a fan of so i bought the oem drive with no software . i would like to set this drive up with nero if nero supports it . thanks again

    i recently upgraded to the nec 3520 from the 1300 and have had no problems so far, they burn fast but my only gripe is the noise - they seem to be a lot louder than my old one!!
