I have a bunch of hi-8 camcorder tapes (analog) that i want to convert to DVD using my Panasonic DVD recorder; then I want to take various portions of those DVDs and make some compilation DVDs. Do I need to use a capture device if I am using a DVD recorder, or does the DVD recorder have that built in??

They have a capture device built in; that's why it's called a DVD recorder. ;) For making compilations though you will need to copy to your computer and edit it.
