    hello!!

just wanted ur expert opinion on the best anti-virus/spy ware software out atm.

i have windows vista ultimate and i think the windows vista firewall is good enough, however i need a decent anti-virus.

i want a anti-virus that uses the least computer resources and protects the best. preferably free but i dnt mind payin a little to keep my computer safe.

any ideas on a decent one?????

    cheers

spywareblaster works well too. its free.

as for virus', i would say the free edition of avg virus protection works well. it might not be good as mcafee, norton, or kaspersky, but its free. and it works well for a free anti-virus.

Get rid of the windows firewall, and just get the free one from zone alarm. avg free antivirus is decent enough for the price. I use spyware sweeper and it works good without slowing down the computer. And only use the Firefox 2.0 browser it is not hardwired into the windows registry like internet explorer.
And finally to protect you if a virus/trojan gets through your defenses get "faronics deepfreeze" . This program boots your computer frozen, nothing is saved and no changes to your c: partition is permanent. If you download a virus it will operate in a virtual world. As soon as you reboot your computer is exactly as it was before the virus infection. I've used it and worked very well.

and jony218 if the windows firwall is crap, can you recommend the best all in on software then? saves me running 2 different progs for defending?

(would like the computer usage to be low)

think ESET NOD32 is the best solution
(not fresh 3.0 versions, but 2.71).
and about spy/malware i think it is lavasoft Ad-Aware.
firewall is comodo personal firewall pro (free) or agnitum outpost (commercial)

I used to get browser hijacks and viruses once or twice a year with IE no matter what spyware/virus protection combo I did.
Switched to Firefox with the No-Script plugin over a year ago and evrything has been clean since. It can be a pain when you goto a new website and it doesnt load properly, so you have to take 2 seconds to expand the No-Script monitor and accept the page (I am lazy though:p) Once you have all your regular sites setup its really NBD, and having the power to pick and choose what loads is better than starting a thread titled "My browser automatically loads German Grandma porn, how do I get rid of it?"
Heres a whole thread dedicated to this subject (free protection, not the Grandma porn...)

    McAfee is the best.
It doesnt suck up a lot of resources, has active scanning, great firewall.
Plus the virus definitions come from Avert Labs, same labs i believe kasperskys come from.
