    Hey everyone
Hope you can help a newbie
I just got an LG dvd writer
Seems like everything works fine, plays dvd movies, can copy one

But what i really wanted a dvd writer is to backup all my files

most are mpeg, avi home movies that are too large for cd

so i used nero, burned to my dvd-r memorex dvd, (about 4.0 gigs of files)

seems like it all went successfully, but then when i insert the dvd into my dvd writer, i double click my e:, it says function unavailble

Seems like i lost all my movies :(
The dvd seems burned fine, but cant fine the files or get to them

what should i do to back up stuff on my dvd writer so i can view them from my dvd driver, not my dvd player or whatever

    thanks for any help

DO i really need to go through all those steps? doesnt seem like its what i wan

take my last disc for example.
I have several cd's, about 3 , of funny videos, saturday night live clips, and to watch them, I just put them in, double click the file and watch it on my computer

So i took those 3 cd's, and put them on my harddrive, and chose data dic using nero, chose dvd, and moved them all onto 1 dvd.

But now, whenever i put my dvd in my dvd writer, it doesnt read anything
as if there is nothing on the dvd.
IS my unit defective? is it because i need a program, if so which one?
Thanks again for anyone with help

its fine to leave them in the avi format if you are just going to watch them on your pc or laptop but unfortunately if you dont convert the avi's to mpeg 2 which is the format most standalone dvd players require you are not going to be able to see them.
The thread that jerry referred you to will do the job for you nicely but there are alternatives

aN ALTERNATIVE WAY is to use avi2mpeg which you can google for.Run your avi through it and then once the file is converted use tmpgenc dvd author to finish your project by adding menus etc.(BOTH SOFTWAREs have trial periods)

THis avi2mpeg wont convert mpeg 4 files for that you may require something like dvdsanta

    Cant find the files?
Did you chose the wrong multisession function when using nero?

    What should I choose?
too close my multisession, or to continue?

also, i dont plan to watch on television, i just want to watch them on pc

they are .avi, .peg and some quicktime

so basically, i should just burn a data disc to my dvd-r, and it should work on my pc?

i think thats what i did, i wonder if this is a problem with my dvd hardware

i have found with some versions of nero if you have data already on the disc and tried to burn more to that disc you sometimes sort of over write the existing data to the degree that it cant be found again and gives the appearence that there is nothing there
