Did you try with only your new memory in the original slot, the slot your 128 was in? I'm trying to see if its the memory stick, or something else. Another thing, if I assume wrong let me know but if 512 is the most the board supports it sounds a little old, maybe get a can of air to blow out the slot maybe dirty.

try reseating the new ram as might not be properly seated so won't read.

Try every RAM combination in every slot. If it doesn't ever detect the new stick, then either your mobo doesn't support it or the RAM is defective. The latter is more likely. Don't suppose you have any other sticks to try do you?

Everyone else that posted said the same thing I was going to.
If you know its not a slot because original stick works, and you cant get anything from the new stick in either, that pretty much rules everything else out.
I'd return it and maybe look at the mobo manual one last time just to triple check you put the right kind in (buffered, unbuffered, PC2700, PC3200 etc.) I'm sure you checked, and in a perfect world even if you put in the wrong speed, it still works; just at the basic speed. Some motherboards can be picky though, just like some DVD players can be picky with type of discs put in it.

Are you sure? The motherboard may not support newer RAM chips perhaps...

The mobo is obviously quite old, so maybe it has a compatibility issue with the RAM you've bought... Just a thought.

Hmmm, I can't think of anything else at the moment, but with an old mobo, it's hard to say.

I believe that your motherboard is only compatible with PC100 RAM. I found this link for 256MB memory modules and it claims to be compatible for your motherboard:

    http://www.memoryx.net/gigaxac256.html

If the price is too high, you can use it as a reference to find better priced RAM.

who makes the "bad" ram as i had problems with infineon ram not working on some boards but work on others. is that ram ECC SDRAM as Intel 810, 815, 815E, 815EP/VIA KT133/VIA KM133 chipset series cannot support ECC SDRAM?

PC133, PC100, and PC66 are backward compatible in many PC100 Motherboards. My older motherboard supports PC100, but I use PC133. It could have something to do with the RAM configuration though like 32Mx4 vs. 16Mx8 etc...

Also, as DDP stated, there is a chance you bought ECC RAM. If your motherboard does not support that RAM, then that would do it. I am not sure how to tell if it is ECC or not. Some say it on the module, others don't. Look at the box that it came in to see. However, you should return the RAM you have if possible and by different RAM. Make sure it is non-ECC, which is easier to find anyways.

As for RAM requirements, for the time being, use Windows 2000 if possible (if you dual boot, Windows 2000 has to install first then Windows XP). It will be easier on your resources and it is pretty much the same as Windows XP Pro. If you can find a parts store that sells RAM try buying from one of those. Make sure they have a return policy where you can bring it back. Buy RAM and try it out. Then exchange it until you get the right one. Then if the price is too high, take it back buy the exact same RAM from a cheaper source. If it is a couple of $ difference don't bother though.
