Using a crossover cable is a means to share files between 2 puters. I would not use this to share my net connection with other puters on the network. A router easily solved my problem with 4 puters sharing my adsl connection using a straight thru cable for each puter.Your choice mate!
Granted, using a router is a better method. That being said, I would like to hear your reasoning as to why you wouldn't use crossover cables?
I went in and followed the steps above, and after restarting my IP is still 70.224.247.32. The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.
You did it on the wrong connection. Do it on the SECOND Network connection. The one that has the IP Address: 169.254.87.16
I use a cross over cable to share the files of my puter with my laptop. I would not use it to share my ADSL connection with you or anybody. To Dolpin2 - Are u using a crossover cable to connect your network? To pman1130 - Looks like ur problem lies in the use of crossover cable. I know it doesnt work if u use it to connect ur modem to ur puter hence to use it to connect other puter to the net would ne a nono. Peace and Cheers from Downunder!
@t2m - I've used crossover cables to set-up and run networks (sharing both files and internet connections) for years without problems. This is not true. It does work. You have to use a crossover cable when your NOT using a hub (the hub performs the crossover). http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/lansetup.htm http://www.arcelect.com/10baset.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossover_cable To answer your question, I'm currently using a D-Link router and hub for my network.
this is for T2M, cross over cable didnt work when connecting ur modem to ur computer because thats not what it's for. Crossover is used in place of a hub or router because it crosses over data. For ur modem to computer you need to use straight throught cat5 network cable.
I went on my other computer and went under the advanced tab, but I could not do anything becaise it said my WMI wouldnt let me.
I went under advanced and when I selected the allow this computer to share internet box, a warning popped up and told me that I could not do this becasue computer on my network was already using the IP 192.168.0.1
On the REMOTE computer: Start> Run Type CMD In the DOS window that comes open: Type ipconfig /release. Then Enter That should set the IP address information to 0.0.0.0 Then type ipconfig /renew. Then Enter That should set the IP to 192.168.0.X (where X is a random number). Let me know the results.
