ok here's the deal...I d/l many avi or mpeg movies and put them on dvd. The movies are usually out in the movies now so they arent the best audio/video quality. My question is how do I either completely get rid of the hissing in the background or just lessen it so it's not as noticable. The steps I take are as follows....after I download the file I convert it to dvd format by using dvdsanta then I either burn it using nero or roxio. What steps should I take in between to enhance the audio quality and preferably convert to dolby 5.1???

    Rip the audio using virtualdub.
Load into Goldwave, and apply the hiss filter.
    Save as .wav
Load the .wav into Belight and transcode to AC3 DD5.1 audio.
Load the avi into virtualdub. Filter and crop as needed, then frameserve to tmpgenc, or other good encoder, and encode ONLY the video.
Load the m2v and ac3 into DVDLab, author, and burn.

You cannot get 5.1 audio from a 2 channel stereo file, unless you have $500 or so to spend. Be satisfied with DD2.0 in most cases, unless you know how to maintain DD5.1 from a ripped source that has DD5.1.
The virtualdubmod tutorial mentions AC3. It doesn't matter WHAT type of audio is in the avi, this process will extract it.
    Transcode to AC3 with ffmpeggui.
