    Hi

i want to buy a dvd writer i was just wondering is it better to spend a little more and buy a Double layer writer or just a single layer will do

also beside some dvd writers i saw it says dual format is "dual format" same as "double layer" i don't think so because the Burners that say dual format are much cheaper so what does dual layer mean

    Hello Flashed,

A dual format writer means it will write to DVD[bold]-[/bold]R and DVD[bold]+[/bold]R discs.
This is a good choice as it means you can use both types of discs depending on whats available.

A dual layer writer means it will write to dual layer discs. A single layer disc holds about 4.7Gb of data. A dual layer will hold about 8.5Gb of data but are a lot more expensive.
My choice of writer would be the Pioneer 108. They are very popular, very reliable and quite reasonably cheap to buy.
They are dual format and dual layer writers.

I'd still buy the same one.
You don't have to use all the features it has but they are there if you need them.
In six months time when dual layer media has come down in price you may decide you want to use them then.
You won't need to upgrade your dvd writer because it will do everything you need.

Why would you need to if your Dvd writer does everything anyway?

Are you saying that you want three of them?
    That's just greedy.

The 107 isn't that much cheaper, although it is an excellent writer.
I have the hacked firmware on mine and it burns any speed dvd disc at 8xspeed, even 1xspeed discs.
It's not dual layer though, so when the dual layer media gets cheap enough to use I will have to go out and buy a 108

If I didn't want dual layer I would go for the Pioneer 107.
If I did want dual layer but money was a bit tight it would be the NEC2510A dual later burner.
If I had enough cash it would definitely be the 108.
