It could very well be USB drivers conflicting with your OS.

    1. What is your operating system, i.e. XP? Vista?

    2. Have made any updates or hardware changes?

    3. Have you scanned for viruses? in addition, do you have a router, anti-virus program, etc. for protection?

When did this problem first occur?

Did you make any changes or updates to your system?

    What make is your PC?

My suspicion is that it is your USB drivers or your network card. I would find the make and model of your HP and go to their website and upgrade your USB drivers.
