The all around best was the Plextor 716, but alas no more. Now a days I like pioneer and Lite-on (Imgburn will booktype Lite-on burners). New PLextors are now Pioneer with NEC chipsets and are not worth the premium.

I'm still fond of the Benq 1640A. I had 2 brand new ones delivered today,so playing around with them. The 1640A and PX-716A are 2 of the best burners ever made.....

That leaves me with 4 Benq 1640's,2 Benq 1650's, 1 Benq 1620,1 HP640c,and a Plextor 716A. I am well stocked up on some of the best drives ever made. The bad part, these drives will not die.

If I threw a hamburger patty in them, they'd probably cook it perfectly well done and score a 95 on nero's quality scans, LOL.

Have owned: Pioneer, Sony, BenQ, NEC, Samsung, LG and 2 or 3 other brands I can't remember now because they weren't worth remembering.
OVER ALL BEST experience far and away: NEC, particularly in terms of bang-for-the-buck.
    The Pioneer's were ok.
Not real fond of the BenQ.
    REALLY diddn't like the SONY.
The SAMs and LGs are new. Not looking good so far on the SAMs, Jurys still out on the LGs. I only have either of these because the last time I was buying the NECs were out of stock.

    Lol!

After my old school Plextor bit the plastic so-to-speak, i picked up a LiteOn that has honestly been a great burner, especially for the money.

    LiteOn DVDRW/ LH-18A1P

Yeah it booktypes fine. Almost every backup is booktyped to DVD-ROM using ImgBurn.

I bought a 2nd one just to keep it in case this one flops out one day!

Lite-On LH-20A1H Lite scribe burner, excellent quality, Booktypes great, works well with CloneDVD2, Nero, IMGBurn, DVDDecrypter, DVDRebuilder. Best $30.00 I ever spent. Purchased at www.Newegg.com during one of their special sales with free shipping.
Also own 2 other Lite-On drives, SHW-160P6S and a SOHW-1693S drive. The 1693 on some media will skip/pixelate on my Philips stand alone DVD player. All three are excellent burners.

imo, BenQ 1620,1640,1650,1655 plextors 712,716,760 and 740 (which is a relabeled BenQ1640) were the best burners ever made.
NEC before they merged with sony were also very good. 3550A particularly
some sonys DRU8xx series were decent and LG 8163b
unfortunately, they do not make any of these drives anymore although you can find them on ebay if youre lucky.
nowadays, from my personal experiences lite-on and pioneer are reliable and gave me no trouble they are the better ones.

Well looks like my Plextor 716A just bit the dust on me. After about 3 years.

Now looking to get a reliable cheap DVD writer that will also be able to burn DL.

I mostly use Verbatim, Maxell & Sony media .

    Which should I get ?

Need one that has a white or off white front bezel.

I currently have about 27 of the Plextor PX-716A drives remaining. I got a great deal years ago, but was too lazy to sell them. Have been sitting in my closet for almost two years.

I am putting them up bit by bit, example auction can be seen at :

    this isn't eBay.
However Afterdawn is trialling buying and selling, you might want to check this forum out - http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/226

I was about ready to buy a new sata LITE ON LH-20A1P or L, but i've seen 2-3 reviews saying they don't burn tayio yuden worth squat, and that's all I use. I'll bet i've burned 500 and not one coaster. I've been using a Sony DRU 810A for the last 2 yrs but it's getting tired, seems to read and burn slower these days. I'm building a new computer...any suggestions for a dvd burner? Maybe the Sony 830? I do a lot of burning and want a fast clean burner.

But Pioneers are considered top of the line.
