    Hi FCA1975
You have the different channels for the different drive connections. Like ide can hold 2 drives on the cable per port. Your hard drive is on 1 and the dvd/cd drives on the other.
So your burner keeps slipping into PIO mode which I think may be playing into your problem along w/ the CMC media. This pc burner's doesn't look like it likes CMC media .
Now the much older pc may only support PIO mode (older transfer mode) and since all drives at in the mode they are using the same transfer rate.
Probably takes awhile on this older pc. Using PIO & DMA can cause problems burning. Best to keep the transfer mode the same.

Check the connections on this drive (ide to drive & mobo, power connetion) - may want to swap it w/ the cd drive to see if the problem is w/ the connectors. Switch the jumper pins on both drives if you do.

Can virus cause problems - yep all kinds of wacky stuff.
So run these if you haven't got rid of them run - adaware & spybot.
Another good online scanner that is good for getting rid of this is house call:

Hi Binkie7, I was searching for an answer to my question of 'I can burn on dvd+rw and not DVD+r', and found your 'conversations'.

From your advice in regards to updating the Nero to a newer 6.0 version. I have an even older Nero version, 6.0.0.0. So it seems I need to use that link you have provided to update my Nero.

I would like to understand why all of a sudden I need to update my Nero or the firmware to burn a DVD. I have used the same software (DVD Shrink and Nero) for the last two years. My burns is not as fluid as before......is it the way the movie's files are being compiled together that requires newer and upgraded versions of DVD Shrink, Nero, and firmware?

The next thing is, why I rec'vd burn error from Nero two times in a row on two different Sony DVD+R, and then I put in a Memorex DVD+RW I can burn the movie with immediate success!!? I have compared the burn logs and this is what I noticed:
    1. 'Burn process started at 4x (5,520 KB/s)' for the DVD+R, and 'Burn process started at 2.4x (3,312KB/s) for the DVD+RW

    2. For the failed burn the log has these extra entries -

    Hi my2222
Here's some answers to your questions:
why all of a sudden I need to update my Nero or the firmware to burn a DVD
Updates of Nero or any program help resolve bugs the program has. Also there are sometimes improvements. So update Nero to 6.6.0.18.

Now firmware updates help the drive w/ media. One thing it does is program new media codes in the drive 'memory'. This helps the drive recognize new media on the market and use the correct write strategy.

why I rec'vd burn error from Nero two times in a row on two different Sony DVD+R, and then I put in a Memorex DVD+RW I can burn the movie with immediate success!!?
Well RW media has pretty much not changed - no higher burns etc unlike -/+ media which has increased burn speeds and newer ones on the market. This is where updated firmware can help.

Now for your burner - it's a bit older - only writes to +R at 4x, 2.4x for +RW. The last firmware update was 10/04 so newer media may give it a problem. 16x probably will. Probably why the RW is working but not the +R Sony's. The last firmware version is C111 (guess you have a dell pc). Here's a link to update:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1931
For this drive try and use 8x or under rated media.

s it the way the movie's files are being compiled together that requires newer and upgraded versions of DVD Shrink
Shrink hasn't been updated in over 2 year so (unrelated to your burning issue) to rip the newer movies you'll need to have AnyDVD running in the background (has a free 21 day trial) or rip 1st with DVDFab Decrypter (free)

You can post your log like gwen suggested - probably best to start a new thread in Nero for it.
