    Hi Pete,
Thanks for the explanation on DVD-ROM. I just pyrchased and installed one.
I also managed to take care of the additional hard drive by adding a PCI controller card.
Now back to the burning and space on DVD-R. I used DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter combination by following you instructions to set it up. It works fine until it is starting burning process and checks for space on DVD-R. This is what DVD Decrypter reports:

    I 18:23:28 DVD Decrypter Version 3.2.1.0 started!
    I 18:23:28 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 1)

DVDShrink was set for DVD-5 as the default size.

    Thanks for any recommendations.

    amay,

First, let's try going to DVD Shrink, "Edit", "Preferences" then change Target DVD size from "DVD-5" to "Custom" and set size to "4360".

Next, Do you have DVD Decrypter to burn automatically or did you start DVD Decrypter on your own ?

Did you set DVD Shrink to burn to hard Drive or ISO ?

You have gone from one post saying that you're using DVD Shrink and Nero to now saying you're using DVD Shrink and Decrypter.

How about now you tell me what settings you have on DVD Shrink and what you have on DVD Decrypter.

    Pete

    Hi Pete,

Once I set the size to recomended by you, it worked fine with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter combination in automatic mode using ISO.

Next I will try DVD Shrink and Nero combination. Maybe it will work also.

    Thanks a lot.

Hi. I got MainConcept MPEG Encoder and encoded a file to MPEG 2. Then I tried to "add file" it on TMPGEnc. It says:

The video resolution 512x384 cannot be used for a standard DVD. For standard DVD you can only use the following

    352x240 352x480 720x480 (NTSC format only)
    352x288 352x576 704x576 (PAL format only)
    -----------------------------------------------
The video framerate 29.97 fps cannot be used with the resolution 512x384

This framerate can only be used with the following resolutions:

    352x240 352x480 720x480 (NTSC format only)

So I tried to encode it again with 720x480 width/height, but the mpeg encoder gave me an error:

    MPEG video encoding
MPEG audio encoding, audio mode: 2
    MPEG muxing
    Error: BUFSTRM:Unable to open file D:\Video Downloads\Shows\Kenshin\Rurouni Kenshin\Rurouni Kenshin - 12 - Birth of a Boy Swordsman.mpg for writing.
    MPEG output file: D:\Video Downloads\Shows\Kenshin\Rurouni Kenshin\Rurouni Kenshin - 12 - Birth of a Boy Swordsman.mpg
    Error in converting:
    The parameter is incorrect.

    Not sure what to do.

Hello, 2+2=4 and all the ships at sea....

I'm having a very similar issue. Two weeks ago, I purchased my first DVD burner. I've got a couple of movies that I would like to burn. At first, I was using Nero and ran into the error which started this whole thead (and I had 120GB of free disk!) while Googling for an answer.

Since then, I've read the Guide at the top of the Newbie forum for creating DVD's from AVIs, I've read this thread, I've downloaded and installed all the suggested software, and I'm still having issues.

For me, I'm not only getting the errors that the last poster talked about but when I try to go the "wizard" route ala the Guide, I find that I cannot get the file under 140% of the disc capacity (bitrate of 2000). And even if I told it to go ahead with this, it wanted over 170 hours on a dual 1Ghz P4 box to encode it.

So, using herbsman's advice, I tried the route of using the MainConcept encoder, followed by TMPGEnc and then Nero, hoping for it to be, as he noted "done quicker in time".

I've tried several combinations I can see in Mainconcept and, indeed, it's very fast. But unfailingly, when I get to TMPGEnc, it grouses about the format "not being supported" and being unable to open the MPG file that MainConcept created!

In an effort to be thorough, and with hopes that some kind soul can help this DVD newbie, here's the facts:

    The source file:
    File : 700 MB (700 MB), duration: 1:49:04, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 44 %

    Video : 609 MB, 781 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 576*320 (16:9), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Supported

    Audio : 90 MB, 115 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

    With MainConcept, I have tried:
MPEG Type Stream Type Video Mode Audio Mode
    2 Program (V+A) PAL Layer 2
    2 Program (V+A) PAL LPCM
DVD Program (V+A) NTSC Layer 2
    DVD Program (V+A) NTSC LPCM

I know there's something very, very basic I'm missing here. I would appreciate a kick in the right direction. All I really want to do is to write this AVI to one (or more) Memorex DVD-R 4.7GB discs.

    Help? Please?

    720x480 (NTSC format only)
    704x576 (PAL format only)

If you encoded properly to MPEG2 (DVD compliant) file it WOULD definitely be one of the above resolutions.

    Options to click:

    [bold]DVD
PAL (although NTSC is okay too as I'm in Europe)
    Program (Video+Audio)
    Layer2[/bold]

P.S I mentioned [bold]TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5[/bold] btw , not just any old version of TMPGEnc (such as 'Plus')...just to clarify !!
Also if the output filesize is over 4.36Gb after adding them all together in TMPGEnc DVD Author I then run them through DVD2One just to pull filesize down.

    herbsman,

Thank you. I'll try what you suggested. I should have specified what version. I'm using TMPGenc DVD Author 1.5.20.62.

Your quite welcome & I'll continue to help if I can [bold]s_a_alis[/bold].

You actually shouldn't be having any problems if following that route explained , because you actually left details of the file (which is handy) and the only problem I have ever encountered so far/to date is when trying to encode XviD file w/ AC3 audio...

Anyway , let us know how you get on :p)

*grrrrrrrrrr* Well, I want to try this, but, of course, I get home and one of my 9GB SCSI drives (the one upon which I put all the software I need) has decided to depart this veil of tears. *heavy sigh*

So... long story short, I've reloaded the requisite software and am now converting with MainConcept. I was a bit concerned that I follow exactly what you said, so when I set the settings (MPEG Type: 2, Stream Type: Program, Video Mode: NTSC, Audio Mode: Layer 2), I also went into Details and changed the size (which was 576 x 320) to 720 x 480. I hope I didn't pull another "blonde" manouevre.

Sounds like ya got it to me (and I happen to know it's not just blondes that have dizzy moments - lol)

so your setting/option choices were (just to clarify ?) :

    [bold]DVD
    Program (Video+Audio)
    Layer2
    NTSC[/bold]

    herb,

Thankyou. I had selected MPEG-2 instead of DVD. So I was able to get the file accepted by TMPGEnc DVD Author. I created an output thing consisting of a VIDEO_TS and an AUDIO_TS folder. The AUDIO_TS folder contained nothing, while the VIDEO_TS contained the following:
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VTS_01_0.BUP
    VTS_01_0.IFO
    VTS_01_0.VOB
    VTS_01_1.VOB

When I go to "Add video files" in Nero Vision Express 2 I can see the three .vob files, but if I try to add any of them it says it is "unable to insert" them.

Make a folder and name it VIDEO_TS (written just like that, all in caps), take all of your files (both IFO's, both BUP's and all of your VOB's) and place them inside the folder - then use Nero in the "Classic" mode and in the "new compilation" window, under "Video DVD" allow your browser to find the whole folder - and you're off -

    OR,
Do the folder thing and use DVD Shrink (especially if you're over 4.36GB), "Open Files" and allow DVD Shrink to use Nero automatically burn it to disc -

ARRRRRGGGGGGGH!!!!!! (pant, pant, pant, deep breath)

Ok.... no dice again. I am probably being REALLY blonde, so here goes, again.

I have the source AVI (details posted earlier). I opened up MainConcept MPEG Encoder (version 1.4) and set the following:

MPEG Type: DVD (also tried it with NTSC)
Stream Type: Program (Video + Audio)
    Video Mode: NTSC
    Audio Mode: Layer 2

Then I clicked Details since the source video was 576 x 320 and set it, per your posting since I was using NTSC, to 720 x 480 and clicked Ok. Then, I clicked Convert. I ran merrily along and produced a file of .MPG

So, I opened TMPGEnc (version posted earlier) and selected the newly-minted MPG file. And promptly received the error "can not open, or unsupported"..

I know that this is me being blonde, but will you please point out to me my stupidity? I mean, c'mon... given all the help you've given me, I should be burning merrily away by now!

    *sigh*

Right this is what I did just (now):

Added a video clip (so it's an [bold].avi[/bold] file) as Video source + Audio Source (but I set a differnet folder for Output file ... so there's no confusion).
MainConcept has auto set to MPEG 2 for MPEG Type / NTSC for Video Mode / the other two are as we want them - ie; Program (Video+Audio) for Stream Type / Layer 2 as Audio Mode.
    Details state: MPEG 2, 512x348 pixel, 29.97 FPS, 48.000Hz, 2 Channels, 16 Bit.
So without hitting details box ( cos I have NEVER had to before ) I would then change MPEG Type to DVD (which changes the pixel details automatically to 720x480 but also auto chooses LPCM as Audio Type ... we change this back to Layer2. Then CONVERT !:)
    Estimated filesize : 3145mb

I do not change BitRate settings or any of the advanced settings myself , as I have not had anything come out bad yet. Otherwise I might have choosen to experiment , but dont fix what aint broken eh!

P.S. I sounds as if you didnt create an MPEG 2 file at all & only created an .MPG file as stated by yourself..
    @ 2+2=4
NeroVision Express 2 is an encoder & these files just want burning (d'oh).
Use Nero Burning Rom instead , in DVD-Video mode where you'll have a red VIDEO_TS folder (drag n' drop / copy n' paste all files listed above into there).

If you project filesize is above 4.36Gb , you'll have to compress first yeah - have fun !: ]-~

This blonde appreciates all the time and attention you're giving her. I've started up MainConcept using EXACTLY the steps you wrote. It will take about 3 hours, so I'll let you know when its finished. But I could SWEAR I've done this procedure before.

Anyway, when I said "MPEG", I meant that the file was produced with a .mpg suffix. I didn't run it through the file type program to make sure its type. This time, if things munge up, I'll do that, too.

Also, just to make sure, let me point out that I can and have checked out the movie via the DivX player and know that it plays. So the source data is "ok" insofar as it can be played as an AVI.

    Thanks again,

Okay , let me know how you get on Platinum Blonde lass ...

In the meantime I'll have a look at [bold]TMPGEnc DVD Author [/bold] settings I have initiated (has been a while so cannot remember off the top of m' head).

If I pull any more hair out, I'm going to need a blonde wig. *le sigh*

I followed your instructions to the letter, herbs. AVIcodec says this about the resulting file:

    File : 4.74 GB (1003 KB), duration: 0:00:01, type: MPG, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 98 %

    Video : 976 KB, 8000 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 720*480 (16:9), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD), Supported

    Audio : 27 KB, 224 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0], Supported

I go into TMPGEnc and the Project Wizard (1/5) comes up. I select DVD - NTSC and CBR MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2) and the file (above). And once again, I get the "boink" sound and the lovely File ... can not open, or not supported (where ... is the filename).

    *pounds head on desk*

With all these people around here burning DVD's, I know I have to be supremely stupid to be doing this wrong.

    Help?

I "successfully" burned a DVD with Nero Burning Rom, following your instructions, but the DVD doesn't work. The TV says "tv system doesn't match". Could this be because I chose PAL isntead of the other thing?
