nero digital mpeg4 high resolution

I noticed that nero digital MPEG4 has a cinema and HDTV setting. How can this be utilized for a stand alone player (PS3, etc...)
From what i've seen only nero showtime can handle this format.
I am looking for a higher picture resolution for my AVI's to DVD is this an avenue to pursue??????????

If not what the heck is this option for????????
